How long did it take from your first consultation until surgery day?

Recommended Posts

I had my consultation in September. Was supposed to have surgery in November but my kidneys had other plans. Had sugary on May 10th.

My surgery was May 10 as well. Hope you are healing/have healed well! How much have you lost post-op?

my insurance required 3 classes and those we done on a monthly basis. I was on track to have surgery in mid-February (initial consultation was November 11, 2014). I backed out and then reconsidered and surgery was 5/6/15

I started the process in October 2015 and was sleeved in December 2015. I was self-pay, so that was a big factor in the fact that I was able to get my surgery done so fast!

My consultation is July 11th. I'm currently a graduate school student and do a lot of traveling for school. I'm wondering if I can get the surgery before the summer is over and school starts, or if I would have to schedule it during my winter break. Just curious...

That's so funny, nice to know I'm not alone. I'm realizing it just depends on what our insurance requires. I'm so anxious about it- just wondering if I can do everything this summer while I'm free or if I have to do it on my winter break. Let's stay in touch! Lots of luck to you.

Ps- what are you studying? I'm in for social work.

Yes definitely every insurance is different. I don't think I will have to go thru a medically supervised weight loss program from what I have heard from a few coworkers that have had it done so hoping it might speed up the process. Im a nurse and in grad school to become a nurse practitioner… and yes good luck to you and lets keep in touch! I need a sleeve buddy!

How did your consult go?? Did they think you might be able to have it by end of summer? Im still waiting to hear. I have my cardiac and psych clearance done and will get results from sleep study tomorrow after that I just need to wait for my insurance to approve the surgery.

Ugh, unfortunately not. It's a good thing I started this summer because I have all different appointments every week until school starts. The only thing really holding me back is my insurance (Affinity) requires that I see a nutritionist, once a month for 6 months. So that takes me into my winter break. It definitely could be worse, there is no supervised diet or any of that, but I just wish I could bang out these appointments and get it done.

I'm glad yours went well! Does your doctor think you'll be able to have an August surgery? If you do you'll have to keep me updated on how you're doing!

Aw well you will get there when you get there!! I have everything approved and they said they will be calling this week to schedule for mid August. It all happened so fast from my first consultation on the 11th and I'm feeling very anxious and overwhelmed!

I had the 6 month pre-op weigh ins and such that are required by most insurances. Then my surgeon got into an accident and was out for a while. All in all, consult was Feb 17 and surgery is Aug 4.

YAYYY but this is what you wanted. Just in time for a little recovery before school starts again. I know it's not hard to stress, but remember how far you've come to do this and how much healthier you will be. It's a giant lifestyle change but SOOO worth it!!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
