Where does the food stick at??

I have a question and i've searched and cannot find this, but I have had some issues with food sticking at times....I cannot visualize where it sticks at? IT's usually one of my first bites and it's usually something dry like bread or rice so i'm thinking it can't be because i'm full. Is it sticking in the space where the food passes through the band? HOw can I avoid this from happening since I do not drink with my meals? i've tried chewing it up very well but sometimes it JUST happens and its so uncomfortable...any advice is welcome. :)

Hi Mischievous... I have read that in general bread and rice are not really compatible with the band.. They are too dry and since you cannot drink with your meal they get stuck.. Most banders I know of avoid eating those items and pretty much cut them out of their diet... But that is just what I have read. I don't know for myself...

My dr said to think of having the band as being like having a funnel shape at the top of your stomach and when food gets stuck it gets stuck going down into the thin tube of the funnel - where the band is, and there are some foods like rice and bread that apparently don't go down the thin tube well regardless of how well its chewed. Still on liquids so haven't experienced 'stick' yet and so not looking forward to it.

The food gets stuck in your stoma. Your stoma is the part of your stomach directly under the band. The band squeezes your stomach into (kinda) two stomachs. Your stoma (with restriction) can be as narrow as a pencil led. Can you see trying to cram rice down there? :)

Some foods just plain don't work for people. bread, rice, Pasta, veggie/fruit skins... those don't break down well and travel through such a small hole.

Personally, I can't eat anything with a flour/yeast combination. It just plain won't go through. But that's okay because there isn't a food in the world that I need that has flour and yeast.

I agree on avoiding bread and rice, which I have LEARNED I don't need anyway, but I also have a problem with chicken breast and other Proteins I do need to eat and I try to keep them at a more liquid -moist consistency, but adding sauces can be high in calories so i'm working on this. I don't think I have much restriction as I can still eat Quite a bit but do experience the stuck episodes at times and they are NOT fun!!

I didn't voice this well...I rarely eat bread but I was trying to give some examples of the dryness factor....argh sometimes I simply cannot put into words what i'm thinking. Some of the foods that are normally getting stuck are chicken, tuna and/or ground beef without sauces. Others are apple and pear-which really surprised me!

Dry meats will do it as well. chicken breast is particularly dry (white meat). Luncheon (deli type) meats are offenders as well. You're better off with meats to have some kind of sauce or juice on them to help soften.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
