6 month check-up up

Recommended Posts

So I went to the doctor today for my 6 month check-up. Things are going great I'm down about 65 pounds and I feel amazing. I went from a size 18 - 20 and am now wearing a size 10.

Here was my only confusion. I asked the doctor what a target weight for me should be. I'm 5'3 37 years old. He stated 165 - 170. I'm at a loss I feel I need to be at 140 in normal BMI range.

He wasn't saying I shouldn't lose more but he said it's okay to be slightly overweight and studies show you live longer.....

Just confuses me as when I originally went he said he was looking for me to lose a hundred pound.

Thoughts? How did you come up with your target weight?

really the BMI charts are not all that realistic, that is why he told you that. They are based on height and a very low, borderline unhealthy body fat percentage. It sounds like he is more concerned with you having a healthy body composition which is more important.

True but it still seems a little high. Wondering how others come up with a goal

I think doctors set your goal by the expectation that the average sleeve patient loses 60% of their excess weight. However, you absolutely should set your own goals. If you want to aim for 140s, then go for it!

At my three month check up my doctor said something along those lines. I told him I would be happy when I get to a healthy BMI and he said he would be happy around 200 pounds.

My initial consultation with the surgeon, she told me she would like to see me under 200 pounds but I would have to work really hard for it. (I am 5'10".) At my one year check up I was at 173 was the very top of my BMI range and dr was thrilled. Having said that, I went to a plastic surgeon when I was at 180 just to see where he thought I was and what he thought about what I would need for plastics. His comment was that I was perfectly fine at 180 and if I were to lose more weight, that to only lose 5 or 10 pounds max. (I have done that. I am now at 170.) My point though is this - I was more concerned with what size I looked and what clothing size I wore than I was about an actual number on the scale. Having said that, I also really don't want to look too thin. As you get lower, your body will sort of decide where it wants to be and you can decide if that is a reasonable weight or not. I still think the BMI charts are WAY off too. Maybe body fat percentage is a little better to determine but either way, in the end, you will know if you need to lose more or are happy at the number the dr gave you.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
