Hello, I am to be banded on 8/27/07. I live alone, and wanted to know is it best to have someone stay in the house with me that first week?

Hi there,

you will probably want some one there for the first few days to make you comfortable and help you with things. I live alone also and i went and stayed with my parents which was a big help. Good luck!!

I live alone and didn't tell a soul that I was banded. I had a great surgical experience-no pain, no meds, no gas. I did very well on my own. You need to get up and move around anyway and it's no trouble to prepare a clear liquid diet! I'm probably different from many people because to me it would be tedious to have to "entertain" when I feel like taking a nap or reading.

I got mine July 27 th . I live alone also and was fine without any one there. You should be able to get around pretty good. Best of luck and welcome!!! Donna

If you don't have anyone who can be with you, at least try to arrange for regularly scheduled phone calls. Any anesthesia can cause some delayed problems after you're released.

Better safe than sorry.

I live alone and was banded on August 15th. I had someone pick me up at the clinic and drive me home, they walked me in the house and left. I was uncomfortable and gassy the first 36 hours so didnt want anyone around anyway. I also turned off my phone, as i was sleeping on and off during the day and didnt want to be woken up

I am glad someone asked this question. I also live alone and having my parents here would be silly I would have to help them.

I have friends but I would feel bad asking too much of them. I am trying to figure out who I could get to take me home from the hospital all my friends work. and I just dont want to inconvience any of them.

I am glad to hear I am not the only one alone.

My sister stayed with me for 2 nights. I was glad to have her but it was mostly for moral support and helping get prescriptions filled etc.

I've had a couple of minor surgeries before. My mom always accompanied me, but I only asked her to stay with me for a couple of hours while I slept off the anesthesia. After I woke up, I was good-to-go. I'm not sure if my mom will be able to come this time, and my doctor wants his patients to stay for 24hrs:faint:. I really don't want to stay...maybe we can discuss that. Anyway, if I have to stay I was going to drive myself to the hospital and have a taxi take me home...then right back to the hospital to retrieve me vehicle. This way I've been home and the hospital isn't liable for anything.

I was thinking about doing the Taxi thing too. it is just going to cost me a bundle for the taxi. it is like 50 bucks each way. If the hospital I was going to be at had a decent hotel near by I would use it but it is in a bad area of town where all the nudie bars are.

I dont know what I am going to do yet. I still have to work that part out. But knowing people have delt with being aline after surgery helps me out.

I also live alone. I stayed at my Mom's the first two nights (surgery Wednesday, stayed Wednesday night and Thursday night), just in case anything went awry. She wasn't waiting on me or anything. I got up and got all my own stuff out of the kitchen, etc., but it was just nice to feel the security. The morning of the 3rd day I drove back to my place (34 miles away). I was antsy about the drive, but it turned out not to be bad...I had been concerned about the sitting part, but it was pretty much a non-issue. I was by myself the rest of the time and had NO problems at all.

Let me just say I have the best friends in the whole world. I was talking to my friends trying to see if anyone could take me home from the hospital. Three of my friends told me that it is not an issue they were taking a vacation dayfor my surgery. They all told me that I was important to them and they were definitly going to be there for the whole thing. I tried to tell them they didnt have to do that but they were insistant. One of my friends dad called me and told me he would drive me to the hospital if I needed it too. I love my friends. I was just stunned that they offered to do all of that.

Better to be home alone - the day after surgery my brother and wife came for 4 days :) not a huge problem but would have rather been alone!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
