Kimba Maria Wiggins 81 Posted June 29, 2016 I am lactose intolerant...what plant based high proteinprotein shakes/powders are out there that will work out for me? I don't want to use Lactaid every time I want to drink a shake with lactose in it, so what are my options? I'm also considering plant based Meal Replacements (with high protein). Any suggestions? James Marusek 5,244 Posted June 29, 2016 I was lactose intolerant for a couple months following RNY gastric bypass surgery. I used Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme) blended with Water and with a half a banana blended in. It does not contain lactose.
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted June 29, 2016 Have you considered trying egg white Protein Powder? It will have much lower calories and carbs than plant-based Protein powder. Jay Robb makes an egg white protein powder in lots of flavors that gets great reviews. Trader Joe's and other places also sell unflavored egg white protein powder. Paleo Protein is another brand. And if you haven't, you might at least try protein powder or RTD that is 100% whey isolate protein. High quality whey isolate protein (make sure it is not "whey concentrate" at all) has something like 99.5% of the lactose removed and most people who are lactose intolerant can drink it. Good luck! mngreeneyes 674 Posted June 30, 2016 I became lactose intolerant after RNY surgery. I started almost immediately using Fairlife milk to make my shakes. That helped immensely. I don't know how sensitive you are, but its worth a try. pam
JAM72 16 Posted July 1, 2016 Vega makes very healthy plant-based meal replacements and Protein shakes. I've come to love the taste, but it did take some getting used to. A lower Protein but tastier option is Svelte-brand shakes. I like the Cappuccino flavor a lot but there are several. Both are a bit pricey so I wait for a good sale at GNC or LuckyVitamin.com and stock up. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Daisee68 2,493 Posted July 1, 2016 I am not lactose intolerant so I don't know if this helps, but the powder I use is called Precision Engineered Whey Protein Isolate and it says 99% lactose free on the label. It tastes REALLY good!

Kimba Maria Wiggins 81 Posted July 3, 2016 No milk products, not even whey. Whey I react to badly, so I avoid it. I love cheese and dairy..but I have reactions to it...so It looks like I'll have to eliminate dairy and lactose out of my diet for good. I love soymilk and almond milk and rice milk. I bought Vega 3 days ago and I love it (20g of pea protein). I mix it with soymilk and I'll use Vega after surgery.
pewpewpewpew 83 Posted July 7, 2016 Orgain makes vegan shakes. And Vega is decent. Sent from my SM-N900V using the BariatricPal App
Sajijoma 1,324 Posted July 7, 2016 I was lactose intolerant for the first 6 months after surgery. The Syntrax Nectars were and still are my shake of choice. I also bought the lactase tablets so later on I could tolerate cheese and yogurt. Some people are lactose intolerant for a short period of time after surgery and some never get over it, but even if you are now, there is no reason to think it's forever. EzzyP 11 Posted July 7, 2016 Plant fusion is my favorite Protein powder most whole foods or you can order from vitacost.com. I became lactose intolerant a week post op after surgery. my whey powders are 'isolate' whey and that has the least amount of milk - almost none - so I am able to use it. Sooo delicious plain coconut yogurt and plain coconut milks are my favorite alternatives. I can now eat cheese so am going to try dairy yogurt when i can but scared. Then they say you can try milk. In the meantime until you can eat something like deli meat i used Protein gel packs from the 'bariatric source' to get enough protein.
