How much weight did you lose on your pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

My VGS surgery is scheduled for July 13. My insurance company did not require me to do complete 6 months of dieting. My doctor wants me to go on a 10 day pre-op diet that consists mainly of liquids. I've been trying to get a head start by eating healthier foods and smaller portions, and have lost 7 pounds since Sunday. (However, I was sick on Monday and could barely keep anything down, so that probably accounts for a big portion of the Water weight lost.) My highest weight was 232---I am 225, as of today. I would love to be at 215 on the day of my surgery. Is it possible to lose 10 pounds in the next 13 days?

I don't have a date yet -- it is likely going to be in August. My insurance did not require any formal weight loss, but my surgeon requires 3 months of monitoring and meeting with my NUT. My 3rd visit is July 6. I have been working on changing my habits -- chewing more, separating eating and drinking, doing high Protein low carb, reducing caffeine and carbonated drinks, etc. You might lose that much, but don't stress on it. Follow the diet given to you by your team -- it is meant to shrink the size of your liver to make the surgical process easier as they have to move your liver to get to your stomach. On May 11, I was 271.5. Today I'm 256.3. I don't have to do entirely liquid for my pre-op -- it's 2 liquid meals and one low cal high Protein low fat meal for weeks prior to surgery. The weight will be coming off soon enough. Work on changing your attitude towards food and eating so you're ready for the long haul.

I had to do a 2wk pre op diet as well. First week was 2 protien shakes not to exceed 200 cal a piece and a meal at upper. 3 Oz of lean meat and a 1/2 cup of veggies. Atkins meals were the best. They wanted me to take in 90 grams of protien with less than 15 carbs a day. The second week was just protien shakes 4 times a day. I started the diet weighing 373 and the day of my surg I weighed 346.

I had to do a 14 day pre-op diet. When I started my pre-op I was 259, when I weighed in the morning of surgery I was 234. It was mostly liquids... Water, Protein shakes, crystal light, sugar free pudding, sugar free Jello, broth, sugar free popsicles. It wasn't easy but it was worth it!!!

That is exactly the pre-op diet that I will be on. I'm kind of dreading it, but I am so committed to this and you're exactly right....it will be worth it!

I am on the liquid diet as of yesterday. I have been doing a modified version for 2.5 weeks, two shakes, a yogurt and a high Protein meal. I lost 15 lbs in 2.5 weeks. I have a lot more to lose though so I think it is hard to compare. You will lose weight on the liquid diet don't obsess about the number, just rejoice that it is going in the right direction. Good luck!

Was on a 14 day straight liquid ( I did Premier protien and Isopure ). I lost 20 lbs. Then there was another 2 weeks after surgery with only liguids. On pureed foods now (3 weeks out) and liquid diet seems like a distant memory.

You can do it!! It's a small thing to a conquer. Get through this short period and realize the long term treasures.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
