Help! Need Vitamin and Protein suggestions with NO articifial sweeteners

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. My surgery date is July 27th.

I am having a hard time finding Vitamins and Protein shakes/powders that don't contain artificial sweeteners, and yet are palatable.

I get awful Migraine type headaches from artificial sweeteners. It happens every time with Aspartame and often with Sucralose.

Yesterday I bought the Centrum chewable vitamins. My doctor says they can be used. I took one for the first time last night and BOOM! Migraine! I couldn't figure out why. Then I grabbed the bottom and it has Aspartame. I didn't even think about that being in a Vitamin, but it makes sense they want to sweeten a chewable.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a quality chewable Vitamin good for bariatric surgery patients that uses Stevia instead?

The same goes for the Protein shakes/powders. I found the Iconic premixed Protein shakes. I really like them. However, they are also $3 bottle and only come in premixed.

Does anyone know of some protein powders that use Stevia AND taste good, while also having high protein and low carbs?

I started reading the post op diet today and read about the sugar free jellos and sugar free puddings and other things like that and thought - I won't be able to have any of those. I don't think most of those are available with Stevia yet.

If anyone else is in the same boat and has some suggestions for me, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for the help!

Terra's whey, Pretty Fit, Designer Whey and Jay Robb are all sweetened with stevia and taste good.

About Time is another Protein Powder sweetened with stevia. I liked that, and I really liked Jay Robb a lot. I did not like Tera's Whey at all -- I thought it tasted like dirty dishwater -- but that's really an individual thing.

@@Bufflehead - Haha, dirty dish Water. Isn't it funny how different things taste to people? I bought some of the premade Orgain Protein shakes and I swear they tasted like Band Aids. I don't go around chewing on band aids, but you know that smell - well it tasted that way!

I picked up Core Power Protein banana Milkshake at the airport and it was delicious! They use honey to sweeten.

Does anyone have any chewable Vitamin suggestions that don't have the artificial stuff in there? I'd prefer Stevia. I absolutely can't have aspartame. I don't always have a reaction to sucralose. So I don't know if that's only minimally used if that would be ok.

GNC sells a natural (no artificial sweeteners or flavors) total lean Protein Shake. The best part is that they sell it in a individual serving pouch so you can try it to see if you like it. I like the vanilla one.

I never thought about the artificial sweeteners in Vitamins. I try to limit artificial sweeteners as well. I noticed that everything that my Nut wanted me to eat after surgery had artificial sweeteners in it.

Some of the other products that I love and use daily without artificial sweeteners are True Lemon (instead of crystal light) and Oikos triple zero Greek yogurt with 15 g of Protein.

@@shel774 - My nutritionist got me hooked on the Oikos Triple Zero yogurt too. I love it! I've never heard of True Lemon. I'll have to look that up. Thanks for the tips.

I also cannot have any artificial sweeteners, makes me feel "high." Disconcerting to say the least. So all the yummy Desserts, ice pops and shakes that everyone likes, no go for me. Thanks for this post!

@@melliecat - Have you found anything good without the artificial sweeteners that we can have?

I ended up taking Bariatric fusion Vitamins. They do have some sucralose in them, but it seems like a small amount as it doesn't make me sick.

Also, I discovered that Edy's makes a fruit and veggie frozen bar. It has 30 calories, but no artificial sweeteners in it. I love them! I couldn't do the sugar free popsicles because of the artificial sweeteners in them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
