Caring for kids post-op

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all, I'm being sleeved on July 7. My husband is able to take a few days off, and my mom will be able to help me a bit, but my 1.5 year old and 6 year old will still be home with me. Surely I'm not the only mom to have had the surgery with little ones around. How do y'all deal with them post-op? How long could you not pick toddlers up for, etc.? I'd love any and all advice!

My DD was 2 when I had surgery. I wasn't supposed to pick her up, but obviously I had to at some point. She was still sleeping in a crib. I just tried to limit it as much as possible. I also got a stool at Ikea so she could climb onto her changing table, so that helped. Or just changed her on the couch. She would run and get the changing pad, diaper and wipes. It was adorable and helpful.

After a few days I was fine. Just be careful and you'll be fine.

I was sleeved on the 9th of June. I have a 3 yr old and an 9 month old. I waited the two weeks to pick my 9 month old up (I had help from my mom and sister). Taking care of them was fine. Really after about 3 days I felt pretty good. They recommend waiting four weeks to pick anything heavier than 22 pounds, and two week for less than 22 pounds. You got this!

Really, picking her up into her crib, high chair, and changing table are my biggest concerns! I figure I can change her on the couch and have her climb into the high chair on a stool, but getting her into her bed worries me! We've talked about making it into a toddler bed just while I'm recovering so she can climb in on her own, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the advice!

Prep now! Make sure you have not only foods/liquids for you but quick foods on hand for your kids. You won't feel like cooking big meals the first few days after surgery. Anything that can be popped in the oven or microwave is a winner! My doctor stated no lifting of more than 10 pounds for 3 weeks, I know this is hard but it's for your well being. Take advantage of your husband and mom helping out. I'm 5 days post-op and each day gets easier. I only feel pain at the incision site where my stomach was removed and was able to make supper for my daughters and do some light duty cleaning yesterday. Go at your own pace and listen to your body. Hope this helps!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
