Hello...I am pre surgury have seen a lot of people freaking out about getting their Protein with the shakes and powders and so on. However, my Hospital guidelines say they are not necessary and that I don't have to drink them at all if I have enough 1/4 cups of Protein foods a day. I'm curious as to why my Hospital is different! Any one else have a similar story?

I think most are concerned after surgery since you really can't have solid foods for a good 4 weeks and the 2 week liquid diet before. I've also seen where you just aren't eating a whole lot to measure up to 60g of Protein a day. Since 1oz is only 7g of protein I can see the difficulty if you aren't eating that much.

The likelihood of getting enough Protein by food for the first month at least is minimal. I don't start purees until week #2 and even then they told me to have 1-2 ozs of puree 5-6 times a day. That's not going to add up to 65+ gms protein.

From what I can gather you can use nutritional yeast and there are drinks that aren't shakes like Isopure that are Protein heavy.

All Drs have their own programs. Mine wants us to get in at least 80 grams a day as a female and 100 as a male. The more Protein you get in the faster the weight will drop. Same with Water. The more the better, the weight will drop faster.

Protein also helps in healing and minimizing the effects of post-op Hair loss and other side effects.

I'm over a year out and still losing because I keep up on my protein. It also makes me feel better. If I'm feeling tired I can eat a Protein Bar and be energized.

I had to be on Clear liquids for the first few days after surgery, then on full liquids for 2 weeks, then I can move to soft foods. So the '1/4 cups of protein foods' (which is the size of an entire meal, btw) won't come until later, when I can eat solids. If you don't want shakes or powders, Isopure makes a clear Protein Drink that comes in about 10 flavors, I've found it easy to drink and digest. I also like unflavored Protein powder mixed with broth or sugarfree instant pudding. Right now, I'm supposed to be getting 32 oz Clear Liquids + 32 oz full liquids each day, ideally, with 60-90 grams of protein. As you start looking at your options, you may find that the shakes are an easy way to meet those short term needs before you're released to 'real' foods.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
