When did you start doing poop?

Recommended Posts

I'm 8 days out and have been so constipated! I've been taking a chewable probiotic since day 2 and colace for 5 days. Dr. Recommended an enima which helped get out a few hard pebbles, and have only gone one other time of the same. I'm feeling so bloated and have only lost 4 lbs

I talked to my doctor and he prescribed a gentle laxative to help. Was better that night.

I was in the hospital for four days and still hadn't pooped. It took a full week for me, and I definitely experienced bouts of Constipation for the next few months. I started taking s stool softener three times a week. I still do at over a year out. It's been very beneficial.

I expected to be dealing with this issue for a long time. I was wrong. Now I'm amazed at how often I go. Sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. No constipation, no straining. Now I'm regular to a fault.

Can being constipated hurt where they create the new intestine in the new stomach? I am so scared of this!

Not likely. Your colon ( large intestine) is where the poop is stored. You have about 5 feet of large intestine. Around 23 of small intestine. The area they worked on is on the uppermost portion of the small intestine, so your poop would need to be backed up almost 28 feet to cause pain where the surgery was!

Now, things can move slowly, for sure- but I equate this to what babies who nurse do- it's called "gathering". Breast fed babies don't have the bulk and fillers that formula fed babies do- consequently, they poop differently. Because it is mostly water- their intestines will "gather" the fecal matter until such time that there is enough to stimulate the large colon to pass it. The babies are not in pain from it- it is simply their form of normal.

Being on a liquid post op diet is akin to this and the colon requires more volume to stimulate a need to expel it.

Hope that helps

Took about 4 or 5 days for me, then I went a couple days without going. And I went again today. It's slow, but things are getting back to normal.

Less input means less output. Give it time. No need to obsess about it. All will come out in the end. I add Benefiber to my Water to help keep things more regular.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
