What happens when you eat too much?

Recommended Posts

I was previously banded so the obvious answer to that question when banded is, you throw up. What about with the sleeve? I eat very slowly but sometimes I get to a point where I honestly can't tell if I'm full or not and I just err on the side of caution and stop eating. However, I figure over the years I'm not going to be so wise and I was kind of wondering, what happens when a sleever eats too much? Dumping syndrome? Vomit? Discomfort? Thanks for any insight.

I'm 2 years out. When I over eat I'm extremely miserable & it takes a couple of hours to get comfortable again. I try not to do this.

I never had dumping syndrome, but yes to the discomfort and vomiting -although it isn't, at least for me, a full emptying of the stomach (only some was brought up) when I ate too much.

Here is an illustration of what happens when you overeat and have a VSG, that I found in a JAMA publication:

That's me!!! :) Am I entitled to royalties?

If you are one of the 17% of sleevers who experience dumping syndrome, eating too much is about the same as hitting a wall--in fact that is the term generally used--hitting the wall.

Nausea, sweats, dizziness, cramping, vomiting and diarrhea---all of it or a select few.

I asked my surgeon about when will I know when I've eaten to much.

He just chuckled and said, "Valentina, you will know. You will just know".

He was right.

for me it's discomfort ... and it's misery for about 5 minutes ... but it's not because I eat too much ... I still eat too fast ...

Ugh.

That is such a hard habit to get out of ...

One good thing about previously having the band is that it prepared me well for the sleeve. I eat slowly, pay attention to how full I am, don't drink with meals.

When you say you feel extremely miserable, is it like when you eat too much (with a normal stomach) or is a lot of nausea involved? Thanks!

Me too. About 8 years and before my revision, they unfilled me. I feel more prepared for the sleeve but although the band caused serious discomfort before I had to PB (about once a week), there was no nausea involved, just a sense of something stuck. Nausea is something I have a difficult time dealing with so I'm hoping it's not a common occurrence.

I get this weird hiccup, not the continuous kind just one loud one a couple times in a row.

I have felt nauseous for hours after having too much sugar. It made me never want to have it again.

Ive had one episode of the sweats, running to the bathroom.

When things like this happen, I write down what I ate.. So make notes and either stay away from it or retry it again in a couple weeks.

It sure is fun

My "stomach" hurts and I go lay down. Then after a few minutes I am okay again.

Boy, I think the reaction varies considerably! And you've already seen the variety of responses.

You should know I don't have any strictures (stomach or esophageal) or other complications.

I also have never experienced "dumping" -- and consequently I'm not even sure what it feels like. If it ever happens I'll find out.

When I'm over-full a sensation of slight discomfort and pressure in my mid-chest (lower esophageal area) appears almost immediately after a bite or two too much. Immediately, my interest in food disappears. Needless to say I don't keep eating!

For the record, I've never thrown up post-WLS nearly two years ago -- not even once. But then I rarely vomited before WLS.

I'm boring. ;)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
