northstar9148 82 Posted June 27, 2016 Is there a 6 month diet we are supposed to go on before surgery? Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted June 27, 2016 There is no "we" in bariatric surgery food plans, unless you are talking to someone with the same surgeon and the same insurance plan. Some insurance plans require a 6 month diet pre-op, but even those vary in what exactly they require from the diet and how it is to be documented. Your surgeon's insurance coordinator should be able to fill you in on exactly what your insurance requires. If you are self-pay, then very likely no worries -- I've never heard of any surgeon requiring a 6 month pre-op diet for a self-pay patient. It would be a great way to lose patients to competitor surgeons!
northstar9148 82 Posted June 27, 2016 If I could do a pre op diet for 6 months, I wouldn't need surgery. They did tell me they wanted me to lose 15 pounds. I know that's not much, but Iam having a tough time losing even 5 pounds. I have chronic pain and depression. That may be interfering. I got off the pain pills because I believe they were leading me to put on even more weight, but now, the pain is excruciating, which makes me want comfort food. Bufflehead 6,358 Posted June 27, 2016 I hope you do well with your weight loss, that sounds like a lot to manage. I find that when I eat high Protein and high fat foods, but low sugar and low carb, I do a lot better with feeling satisfied yet still losing weight -- good luck to you! I didn't have a weight loss requirement and didn't have a specific"diet" to follow. Talk to a nutritionist at your Bariatric Program and see what is recommended. You could start out by replacing one meal with a Protein shake. Give up soda or high caloric drinks. I would not recommend coming off pain meds on your own.
