maybesomeday 0 Posted June 27, 2016 This seems like the best option for me. I want to have this or edits so badly and my ideal weight they say (for my height and age) is 115-130. I haven't weighed that since freshman year! My BMI is currently 27 which is high but not considered obese. Will I be able to find a surgeon who will perform the procedure? Is it even healthy at this stage of the game. Thanks for any help, Newbie Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
OutsideMatchInside 10,166 Posted June 27, 2016 You could probably find a doctor in Mexico. At a 27 bmi, it doesn't seem like a good option for you. Have you tried Keto?
Sophie74656 1,572 Posted June 27, 2016 I wouldn't do any permanent life altering surgery at that bmi.
Kindle 8,667 Posted June 27, 2016 You definitely will not qualify for insurance. More than likely you won't find a reputable surgeon in the US that would do it period. Your best bet is probably to look at going to Mexico. But personally, I would never consider taking the surgical risks and complications including leaks, abcesses, internal bleeding, strictures, twisting, GERD, and even death for just 2 BMI points. Have you looked at the Obera or other balloon options? Non surgical, reversible and specifically made for low bmi patients.
Oregondaisy 2,021 Posted June 27, 2016 Most doctors want you to be at least 100 lbs overweight.
Shaydi.Laine 237 Posted June 27, 2016 Who says that's your ideal weight? If you're going by the bmi chart, forget that silly thing. It's bunk. With a bmi of 27, and considering wls, I think you may have bigger problems to address.... You do not need wls, but you may want to look into therapy. Amurillo04 109 Posted June 27, 2016 Your definitely way to low for any American doctor to operate on you. And I feel like a decent doctor in Mexico wouldn't operate either. I'd be wary of one who would to be honest. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Munstersfan207 11 Posted June 27, 2016 My bmi was 2 points lower than what is acceptable to have surgery via my insurance. I had high blood pressure and diabetes so my surgeon gave me 2 options...I could either continue with my weight loss through a supervised non-surgical program or I could elect to have him push the surgery through due to my having the high blood pressure and diabetes. It was my choice and I opted or the surgery. He was completely on board and I had my surgery this past Feb. Good luck!!!

BMI scale is not realistic. Your weight is probably at most of our GOAL weights. You could end up losing far too much weight and risk serious complications from a major surgery. It's not worth it at your weight.
Shaydi.Laine 237 Posted June 28, 2016 My goal weight puts me at a BMI of 26.4. I have been there before. I looked fantastic and was the picture of health. The only surgeon who would operate on someone your size would be the back door shady type just out to take anyone's money and damn the consequences. I wouldn't trust any surgeon who would say yes to you. I really think you should seek some mental/emotional help for whatever issue it is you are really having. If you are dead set on having WLS, come back when you are 80-100 pounds overweight.
trmertz 8 Posted July 3, 2016 The reason that you wouldn't qualify is that in the long run it would do more harm to you under the circumstances than good. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
