Anyone have to do post op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I"m on post op day 13 and I feel like I have the only Doctor that makes us do a 4 week post op liquid diet. Every video I see people start puree after two weeks. So here I am still sucking down broth, juice, and my nasty Protein shakes that I can barely stomach. Any suggestions you all have to spruce up my diet to help get through my last two weeks. Also, Protein Shakes are killing me. I have tried different ones and hate them all. Currently, suggestions on how to get all my Protein in. I can only get in each day about 50 g

I did a lot of savory Protein -- you can get high protein Soup at the New Life office. Unjury chicken soup protein is also good.

I also did SF popsicles and SF, FF fudgesicles.

I know the four weeks of liquids sucks! I would just remind myself that New Life has one of the absolutely lowest rates of post-op complications in the country and their conservative eating progression is probably one of the reasons.

And while it seems like it goes on forever, in 6 months to a year from now you'll barely remember it, I promise.

Add unflavored Protein powder to your broths, I also pureed and strained every kind of cream Soup I could find and added Protein to them....dozens of options there. freeze protein shakes for popscicles. What kind of Protein Shakes are you using? Syntrax Nectars are more koolaid-type if you are sick of the same old chocolate/vanilla/strawberry options. I also added Torani syrups to the shakes to change up the flavors. chocolate hazelnut, vanilla raspberry, strawberry banana, Irish cream, mocha, vanilla latte, pumpkin pie, etc.

BTW, between pre and postop I was on liquids for 34 days and I continued to do shakes through all my stages up through maintenance even 2 1/2 years out. It's the only way I've gotten 60-80g every day since day 5.

4 weeks post-op is a long time. I had 2 weeks like most. BUT there is likely some reason dr requires it, so I would do your best to stick with it. Is there any chance it includes things like yogurt or pudding? Sometimes, they consider those things in "liquid" diet. You might ask...

You really need to find a Protein drink you can stomach. At 1 year post-op, I still have 1 Premier Protein shake per day. Have you tried Premier Protein ready made drinks? The powder I use that I LOVE is Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate. The vanilla smells heavenly even and the chocolate is amazing. I will add an Orange Crush powder stick (like Crystal Light) to vanilla powder and 2 oz of Fairlife milk and 4 oz of Water and lots of ice. Tastes like Orange Julius! Yummy! I also add PB2 to my chocolate powder (again with Fairlife milk and Water and ice) and it is wonderful. If you haven't bought any yet, get some of the sugar free flavored syrups to add - peppermint mocha, raspberry, pomegranate, salted caramel, etc. The options are endless. This blog has lots of good recipes - http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/06/my-favorite-protein-shake-recipes.html.

Oh and try the protein hot chocolate in the Bariatric Pal website. I LOVE the amaretto flavor!

Yeah I only had to do 2 weeks pre-op liquids, and 2 weeks post-op. I technically don't start purees until Monday, but my nutritionist who works very closely with my surgeon said if I felt ready to introduce some of the pureed items already, I could. I've added in cottage cheese and soft scrambled eggs. The eggs gave me some gas pain, but otherwise I did pretty well with them. That's so strange that they have you hat 4 weeks.... that's a long damn time.

As for Protein drinks, get GENEPRO. I mix it in with vanilla almond milk and SF chocolate Syrup, and it tastes really good. You can't really taste the Protein at all. I've mixed it with broth too. Others have mixed it in with yogurt, applesauce, etc.

I only have the two weeks of liquids. I am on day four post op and I'm already sick of everything. Horrid taste in my mouth from ketosis isn't helping.

I use optimum nutrition vanilla Protein powder. It's pretty mild, like vanilla pudding but not as sweet. I also use the gene pro unflavored. I am a super picky eater and I cannot tell the difference when I add it to broth.

I was tolerating chicken and beef broth fine before the surgery but postop I am just ugh about them. I had some earlier today but it was a struggle. I'm sending my son out to get some cream of Soups like liptons cup of Soup in hopes that I will tolerate those better.

Nothing ever sounds good right now so I'm really hoping to hit on something that tastes good before much longer.

I had an accelerated progression, but I do agree that the fruit-flavored Sytrax mixes are easier to stomach than ready made creamy ones.

The grapefruit flavor mixed with sugar-free lemonade tastes just like Fresca soda. You can get a sample pack here:

I have purchased Cran-grape Protein mix and made it up with sugar free cran-grape juice that I get at Kroger. I buy it here:

Both sites have a multitude of bariatric products and deliver quickly.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
