Is it a long stall or am I finished losing?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am 8 months out from RNY and have lost 89 lbs.(starting 263, currently 174, by 5'5"). I've only dropped about 3 lbs in the last two months (no increase in calories or amount of food or carbs). I'm wondering if this is about it from the surgery or if I can expect to continue losing for a bit, albeit much more slowly. I'd love to hear others experiences after the first six months. Did you continue to lose? When did you enter maintenance?

Thanks from a long time lurker, first time poster.

As you lose weight if you concentrated on consuming high Protein meals, then you can start to reduce your reliance on Protein supplements (Protein shakes, protein bars) and the calories they contain. So I went from 3 shakes per day, down to 2, down to 1 and then at a year and a half when my meal volume was 1 cup I complete went off the protein supplements. This was the method I used to break my stalls. Your protein requirement is a combination of the protein you obtain from meals combined with the protein from supplements.

Entering maintenance mode will occur gradually. This is my experience with the maintenance phase.

Thanks for this. I like the way you describe phase 1 as Portion Control and phase 2 as hunger control. That makes a lot of sense.

How many calories are you eating? At a certain point you have to increase calories because your body will refuse to keep losing at starvation calorie levels.

How many calories and how much Protein, carbs per day?

It really is important to know what you are consuming to try to help you through this. I know that I had some long stalls along the way as well and thought I was done losing.

The reality is you likely need to make an adjustment because your body has gotten too used to what you are doing and has stalled.

For me, I had to raise my calories but also adjust my carbs/protein. For me I started eating almost the same things for Breakfast and lunch every single day along with even the same Snacks. For dinner I would change up my Proteins and veggies but it always amounted to the same calorie/carb/protein count daily. That would get me stuck after a while.

I began to change up what I was eating and even changed what exercises I do to help my body get out of a rut. I think the longest stall I had was about 4 months.

I reached goal in March and things settled down. Now in the last month I dropped another 8lbs and that is because I really did change those routines.

If you provide us with more info, we might be able to help you get past this stall. I do not believe you are done.....you just need to adjust.

If I can get to goal even after not being able to exercise for the last year due to 3 major surgeries....anyone can. I had no choice but to control my diet because I could only do PT type exercises. Nothing that really burns calories.

Hopefully this makes some sense?

I've just recently been able to get both the Water and Protein minimums, in the last 4 or 5 weeks. These are my nutrition stats:

Calories 850-1100 - usually closer to the high end

Protein 70 -90 , usually closer to the low end

Carbs 60 - 90

H2O 48 -72 oz

Maybe my carbs are still too high?

Try cutting your carbs back so your Protein out numbers your carbs at least 2 to 1.

What kind of carbs are you having?

Mostly fruits and some nuts, though I do have the occasional flatbread wrap. And very rarely I indulge with a few tortilla chips and salsa or low carb spaghetti. But again, rarely, like once or twice a month.

Make sure you are getting enough protein and fluids and the carbs should fall into place.

I'm glad you wrote this post! I'm at 9 months and stalling. I noticed lately that I have not made all the right food choices so I'm going back to the beginning basics and hope that helps some. I exercise like crazy with strength training and cardio so I think I need to adjust eating because of that too. Kinda lost, kinda trying to figure it all out...lol

Update: 2 months later and 11 more pounds gone. Yep- it was a long stall and as of today I'm down 100 pounds total! Upped both Protein and exercise, so I can't say what exactly was the key - except just staying focused on the plan.

Onwards!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
