I had RNY on 6/20 and although my surgery was a success, I experienced horrible pain. I couldn't get comfortable, couldn't sleep, the pain was all over my tourso and into my back. They gave me pain meds orally but no IV self serve of which surprised me. I ended up staying 2 nights in the hospital and since I've been home I'm doing better but still a lot of pain. When did you start adding Protein shakes? I'm looking forward to adding those in and mashed potatoes! Right now it's all Popsicles, Crystal light, Jello and broth.

Sorry you are having such a struggle with pain! I also had oral (liquid) pain meds, no IV, but I don't think my pain was as bad as what you seem to be experiencing.

My bariatric team had me sipping Protein Shakes within a couple hours of surgery. No mashed potatoes for me though -- high carb, low Protein slider foods like potatoes are completely off the menu under my program until goal weight has been achieved and maintained for at least six months.

I meant to say that my diet does not include potatoes either. My surgeon ordered IV pain meds postop. I found that walking helped as much as the meds., though. I had my sleeve performed on 6/ 20.

I can have mashed potatoes next week... but I was warned that opting for them can definitely slow weightloss, which I understand. Honestly I may have it once or twice, and then that's it. Definitely not much of it. Just enough to get a bite or two of flavor of something that isn't a damn liquid.

I had horrible pain with my sleeve. I'm two weeks post op, and it's only been about 5 days since the gas pain subsided. They definitely gave me pain meds through my IV and that helped a lot.

I had terrible pain right at my sternum when I woke up in the PACU...bad enough that I was crying and they did a 12-lead EKG to rule out anything cardiac. It subsided with an IV dose of Dilaudid. I was on a morphine PCA pump and stayed 2 nights in the hospital as well, and I'm now down to two doses of oral oxycodone daily. I tried to skip my daytime dose today and paid for it with a great deal of pain :( I'll try again in a couple of days. My surgeon said it's absolutely normal to need pain relief for a week or even longer. My surgery was Tuesday 6/21.

Thanks ShelterDog64. I seemed to be the worst off of all the patients there at that time. I kept apologizing to the nurses for being such a PITA. They were all amazing and took great care of me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
