Drain tube stalling recovery

Recommended Posts

I have a drain tube that will be in until Monday. It has become sore and bruised at its entry point. Every time I move, i can feel it moving and tugging. I honestly feel like the drain tube is stalling my recovery. For the most part, all my other incisions are bare able and at times, I don't feel them at all. The tube is located right under my left rib cage. My underwear hit it and when I sit down my breast hit it. It's inconvenient and in a bad place. I think if it were out, i could put on clothes and get out of the house. Is anyone having a similar experience with a drain?

I'm pre op. Surgery is Monday and my surgeon refuses to take it out until 7/6. Nine days!! I honestly am going to have my nurse friend take it out before then. I'm not dealing with it that long. Unless I can beg at the hospital.

I had a similar issue but the drain tube created a signifcant pain in my shoulder. The minute they removed it (was not a comfortable procedure) i felt way better afterwards

I would be careful asking your nurse friend to do you a favor like that. She could end up losing her job if there is no Dr. order to do so.

I will fight the doctor in the hospital to take it out. One way or another I'm not keeping that thing for 9 days. I don't want it at all. Some surgeons don't use them. I wouldn't give them her name. Lol

I had surgery July 22nd and have a drain....like you everything else feels great except for the incision with the drain. I called my Dr this morning and they said it has to stay in until my follow up visit on Aug 1st. 10 days!! I hate it!! But I was praying for them to remove the band and do the sleeve in one surgery so I guess this is the price I pay for that.

I had conversion as well, and was given a drain. My doctor took it out for me at five days because I was doing well. Uncomfortable!! But I'm glad it's out. Listen to your doctor....the drain is there to make sure there is no leaking or internal bleeding. Way worse than the discomfort of the drain!

So did it hurt coming out? Don't want it in and scared to have it removed.

Thank you! Praying you're right!!

@@SwampBillies it's not bad. It hurts for about 30 seconds. It feels weird more than anything else. Don't worry!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
