Got a surgery date: what does that mean?

Recommended Posts

I completed all my pre-surgical testing, my 6 months of weigh ins, and after about a week and a few days after my last visit with my surgeon, someone from his office called with a scheduled surgery date. Am I missing something? Does that mean the insurance approved my surgery? I feel like I missed a step. Can someone help me figure this out?

Call the office, but yeah if someone called you about a surgery date that means you did everything you were supposed to do and your insurance approved you and that's why they called.

woa, lets wait on that happy dance for now

as OP have said - call your docs office

don't want to be a doubting dora

i am playing devils advocate

i think the office needs to tell you OFFICIALLY that you have been approved

understandable that you were so excited when office called, you didn't think to ask

call tomorrow and get the scoop/answer

my fingers, toes, and nose are all crossed!! :)

good luck bud

Looks like we are good to go; just after I posted this I got a call for pre-surgical testing and for a class for pre-op patients. I asked the same question just to confirm and she explained that they wouldn't have been able to schedule my surgery date without it being approved by insurance first. Let the happy dance commence!

I don't think that is necessarily true. When I was shopping around for surgeon, I had a surgeon explain, we can go ahead and do the surgery and then you can apply directly to blue cross blue shied. So I don't believe all surgeons are honest and I'd hate to go through with surgery and end up with a 20K bill.

When I was approved, I received a letter from BCBS stating that I've been approved for 5 days in hospital (thats only if something goes wrong) and with a date. That date had to be changed twice. The letter states, if the date changes its up to you to notify them (not the surgeons office). But it will be the surgeons office who calls them right before my surgery date to firm up things.

I get what you're saying; I actually have a primary and a secondary insurance I'll probably give them both a ring just to triple check and keep an eye out in the mail for any letters.

No judgement here! My mother was a smoker since her teens, she quit when she was in her 50's and she smoked every day for all those years; she quit with the help of the medication chantix. So don't give up hope. It is very possible; maybe see if there is a smoking cessation program in your state? Try to tell them you are having surgery and you want help quitting.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
