AnaLiza 42 Posted June 24, 2016 Oh my goodness.... I'm 17 days post op and this morning I woke up choking because of acid reflex. It was so bad! I couldn't breath. Scared me! I took some Pepcid I was prescribed not realizing I was supposed to have been taking this all along twice a day to prevent this from happening! Let me just say.... Lesson learned! It's scary to wake up choking from acid in your esophagus!! Any tips on how to get rid of this fast should it happen again? Would appreciate feedback from post op patients that have experienced this journey. Thank you Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Montana Gal 448 Posted June 24, 2016 My surgeon required taking a PPI(like Pepcid) twice a day for the first 30 days, I didn't have any acid reflux with that in my system. I would guess that if you continue taking the Pepcid as prescribed twice a day that you may not have a problem again(hopefully). A good lesson learned for sure! A quick way I used to get rid of reflux was to use 1tsp of baking soda in a glass of warm Water and sip on it, went away within minutes. Also, chewing gum helps by producing saliva which in turn helps rid the body of acid. Now both of these were used before my VSG, so please ask your surgeon's office if they are allowed. I know on some plans chewing gum is off limits. Good luck, hope this helps a little.
