1 week today! The nerves have set in.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

This time next week I will be in hospital recovering from my bypass. I'm doing my best to stay relaxed and calm but the nerves are starting to set in.

Any words of wisdom from you guys who have been through it or anyone else feeling the same? :) What are the first couple of days like?

Thanks in advance.

The first couple days will probably really suck. Some people have smooth sailing, but most of the time, you're in pain, and you're tired, and it's hard to move around. However, it improves so, so quickly! Just make sure you're doing what the doc and nurses tell you to do. Walk, walk, walk! And sleep. The difficulties and discomfort in the beginning are so worth the results. I'm over ten months out now and down 164 pounds since the day of surgery. It took me about 6-7 months to feel wonderful, as before then I was still struggling to get my calories in and I was losing so rapidly that I was exhausted all the time. But now, I feel amazing! And you will too! Just do your best, and never forget that this will soon pass, and you'll have the rest of your life to be happy and healthy. :)

I'm 10-1/2 weeks out from surgery, down 40 lbs, and my words of wisdom is just relax. The excitement, anxiety, worrying isn't doing you any good. Calm down! Go into this knowing that once you are in the operating room, and they put you under, your life will be different when you wake; but different in a good way. The first week you will have discomfort and pain, and you will be tired and question why you did this to yourself. But, week 2 you begin to feel better, and week 3 even better, and by week 4 you are feeling pretty good! I feel pretty normal now, have finally realized what "full" feels like now, and am enjoying being down at least 1 size already.

Nerves and anxiousness is normal; just don't let it get to you and make it negative. This is a positive thing you are doing for your health. You will get through it and you will be darn happy you made this choice. Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
