So I'm not a nutritionist but I've done a lot of research on diets. There is a lot of new research out there that retracts the low fat craze. Many of the low fat options are enhanced with sugar or are very over processed. Skim milk for example is very processed to make it skim. It's very far from its original state. I am alarmed at all the "low fat/fat free" recommendations for the wls meal plans. Anyone else recognize this and are as alarmed as I am?

I don't specifically do "low fat".

I lean toward low-fat dairy products (because they are made low fat by removing fat and not by adding other things), and avoid fried foods. I tend to choose leaner meats like turkey, chicken, fish, etc. (most of the time).

I DO NOT eat artificially/processed "low fat" foods. Read labels. For instance, reduced fat Peanut Butter usually has high fructose corn Syrup and has more calories than regular.

For processed foods, when fat is reduced/removed, something else is added: usually sugar and/or salt.

On my surgeon's recommendation I avoid high fructose corn syrup like the plague.

I never thought low fat was a great idea because it never helped me loose weight pre or post WLS. Carbs are and will always be my enemy. VSG is a tool that works for me because it is much easier to stick to a low carb diet. I do my best to avoid saturated and trans fat. I do low carb but I don't intentionally do low fat. With that said my taste buds are accustomed to some low fat products like skim milk or low fat yogurt. I also prefer grilled chicken to say greasy sausage. However, I intentionally avoid low fat cheese and eat healthy fats like olive oil or nuts.

yes! I agree. I try to avoid chemical sugar substitutes and fat free things that are not meant to be fat free. While there are some products I like better in a reduced fat dairy version, I do not avoid or over consume healthy fats either.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
