Anyone out there dealt with H- pylori while going through the steps to get surgery.

Recommended Posts

Well I've been on the journey to get my sleeve surgery since last year. Right when I am done with all the appointments and tests, I get a call from my bariatric doctor's office. The PA called me and told me that in my stool sample they detected H- Pylori. It's a bacteria found in the stomach. Some symptoms are vomiting, irritable bowel syndrome, Gerd and pain in the stomach area. I never suffered from any one of those symptoms. I was prescribed amoxicillin, clarithromycin and omeprazole. I was told to take the pills twice daily for two weeks. After pills are done, I am to wait another two weeks to retake the test. The PA told me 1 in 20 patients continue to still have H- Pylori. Well today I finished taking the antibiotics. So now to wait for two weeks to retake the test to see if it's gone or still there. I am so upset because I am so ready to have my surgery and than this happens. I pray that it has gone away with the treatment.

I was wondering if anyone has gone through what I am going through and how did it work out?

Hello there, I just read your message and wanted to respond to your question, it may not help because I haven't had the surgery yet, I was diagnosed with it and was taking that combination of antibiotics 4 times a day for 10 days, I wasn't aware that there was a follow up appt. needed, something for me to look into, but I was just like you, I was scared and upset, thinking is this a sign from God that this isn't for me since I've only been praying forever to be led in the right direction to make the right decision, not sure if I'm not just looking for an excuse not to have it done, I'm scared, but everyone I've spoken to said they would do it all over again, sorry I'm rambling, but FYI all of those antibiotics gave me a terrible yeast infection LOL so be sure to request diflucan or something equivalent your going to need it, hopefully not, I hope that things work out for you.

Hi Ms. Thompson....

Thank you for replying. I also felt the same way...Thinking maybe it's a sign from God not to get surgery. But it can also be a test as in to see how committed we are to get our surgery. About the yeast infection..yea it's terrible. Antibiotics fix one problem and give you another one.

You should definitely look into speaking with you bariatric office to see if you need a second test, that way you don't waste anytime. Wish you good luck and hopefully we both come out ok ????

They found my h pylori during my EGD. Has 2 weeks of treatment, but my surgeon required me to wait 12 weeks after treatment to do the breath test to see if h pylori was gone. He said if you test too early, they might not get accurate result if it is truly gone or just temporarily diminished.

It would be devastating to us to get an ulcer or stomach cancer ( which can be caused by h pylori)

My test showed it was gone after treatment and my surgery was just approved.

Hang in there- this is for your health & safety!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
