Can I reassure anyone who is nervous about the actual surgery and dying ...

I have been an OR nurse for over 20 years and virtually no one dies during an operation (we don't like it because there is too much paperwork). In fact you are safer during the op than in the week or two afterwards.

The biggest risks with this surgery are infection and blood clots. You can control blood clots to a certain extent by co-operating with the nurses and physios by getting up and moving as soon as they permit you to and wearing the stockings or compression sleeves they give you. For infection make sure your nutrition status is strong before surgery because that will help your immune system battle any bugs. In addition follow your surgeon's instructions with regard to dressings etc. Also if you notice any swelling/pain/hotness/redness report it straight away.

Occasionally something unexpected happens, but you are more likely to die in a car accident on the way to the hospital than as a result of the actual surgery.

I'm probably getting way ahead of myself here as I don't have a date yet, but: I've had two surgeries in my life, both on my eyes when I was a child. The first time, the anesthesia made me vomit explosively. The second time, I told my anesthesiologist about it and he said he would give me something to help the nausea (that was in 1988). He did, but I still had bouts of vomiting after, (nothing like that first time, however). My question is: If you have this reaction to anesthesia, will it negatively affect the surgery or cause complications?

Well tomorrow is the big day! I have finally managed to get everything taken care of and ready to go. They changed the hospital on me to Coral Springs Medical Center. I am to be there by 1pm and the surgery is scheduled for 3pm. Had hoped to go earlier and get it over with. Tomorrow starts the 1st day of the rest of my life. Now I have just got to work on my husband :). Praying for you soon2bthinmiami!

I am scheduled for my gastric bypass on August 11th at Northwest Medical Center. I understand your fears about dying. It's always a scary thing to be put under but I am sure you will do fine! And just think how much better you will feel as the weight comes off. You will be able to have so much fun with your girls. I am 66 doing this because I want to spend the rest of my life in a healthier state, able to enjoy it. I'll be praying for you!

My fear is dying. I have 3 daughters. Youngest is 2, middle 10 and oldest 13. I know the risks are 0.23% at my center of excellence but I am a worrier. Other than a BMI of 40 I am healthy, no sugar, hypertension, cholesterol or sleep apnea issues, just a little knee pain. I'm self pay and scheduled for Aug 11. I need someone who's having bypass surgery around the same time to buddy up with. I'm having it w Dr Sosa at memorial west in Pembroke Pines. Anyone out there?

I think it's perfectly normal to have pre-op fears. I had an appointment yesterday with my surgeon and the nurse said my pressure was high (It's normally normal) and I realize that I was a little nervous of having the surgery.

Today starts the liver shrink. I have more of a fear of my liver not being smaller when he goes in.

I think if anything my family and friends are more fearful, than I am. They forget that I can pick up on certain emotions and I can tell that their recent attitudes towards me is fearful that I won't survive the surgery or that I will fail and the surgery would be for nothing. I have placed all of my fears, doubts, and nervousness over to God. He's in complete control and if it's my time to leave this earth, then I'm secure in the knowledge that I will be at home in heaven with him.

@M Ashley You should speak to the anesthesiologist about your reaction. Things have come a long way since you had your previous surgeries but hopefully they can do whatever is necessary to reduce any reactions.

I have the same problem and despite the best efforts of the anaesthetist and my specialist I still vomited for 3 days solid then intermittently for the next 4 days. I had no negative effects on my pouch though. I do still get nausea most days .. especially in the mornings. My doc assures me that will settle down with time.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
