Thecloude1 342 Posted June 22, 2016 Yes you will!! I'm 4 months out gastric bypass and I can eat most things...just in small amounts. I did the low carb thing a couple different times in my life and while yes I lost weight....I would get sick of just meat and vegetables which lead to me going off plan , thus regaining the weight....I chose WLS so I have a tool to help me and be able to eat all healthy foods...lean Protein, veggies, fruits and whole grains [emoji3] All of these things are on my plan. Good luck!
hazelzay 75 Posted June 22, 2016 I've been on the forum about a year and I've heard that people who have had a bypass do find that their tastebuds change and some foods cause dumping. I had a VSG and neither is the case for me. I like all the same stuff and I have zero tolerance issues. What kind of surgery did you have (or are you planning to have?) I just had the gastric sleeve . And my mom had the bypass 10 years ago and from judging there's more intolerances after surgery with the bypass .

All the 7 surgeons in there said with the sleeve you will not get dumping like with the bypass because their not removing and retorting the intestines
OutsideMatchInside 10,166 Posted June 22, 2016 @@hazelzay Pre-threating people kind of sets the tone for the thread Anyway I eat lots of things I like all the time. If you can cook and you are willing to spend money on things, you can eat just about anything you want. The sleeve is not the end of life or enjoying food. Pescador 1,374 Posted June 22, 2016 There is nothing I cannot eat. Nothing. There will be that day. Hopefully you focus on the good stuff. Three years later I am doing shakes now, trying to lose.
LipstickLady 25,682 Posted June 23, 2016 Fitst...if you post in a public forum be prepared for all kinds of comments including negative ones I am 10 months post ip and basically eat whatever I want just small portions. I have burgers, pizza, ice cream, chips...just small portions. I have still been very successful with my weight loss. First I'm talking about rude and nasty ones . We all have a journey and I'm the type of person that puts myself in someone's shoes before I sit there and make negative comments . The thread is not for that in my opinion . For example if someone on here is 300-400 pounds and they said they never realized how big they were before surgery it would be rude for me to comment and say "well how the hell do you not know " now that's rude and I have seen people on here be rude like that . I have NEVER seen that here and I've seen ALL kinds of nonsense. Personal attacks are not tolerated. Report that stuff for sure!
LipstickLady 25,682 Posted June 23, 2016 I have to say that I am definitely a vegetarian after being sleeved. I can't eat any kind of meat, it makes me nauseous and throw up. I can't even stomach the smell of it. I was a little sad because meat was a huge part of my life. However, I'd much rather be thin than eat meat and I do find a lot of great vegetarian options. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I am definitely a meat eater but I have a kid who wants to go veggie. What are you using as your main sources of Protein? I want to make sure she gets enough and no one knows Protein like a WLS person! THANKS!!
sharonintx 1,275 Posted June 23, 2016 The answer is Yep. You most certainly will. Perhaps not in the quantity you are accustomed to but you will indeed enjoy your favorite foods again. Just today I have enjoyed some donut holes. half of a sangria margarita, and some delicious Mexican food. Not in the amounts I would have enjoyed in the past but the few bites of each that I did have were excellent. There will be a lot of advice coming to you about what should remain off limits, how you'll need to count calories, carbs, Protein, and blah blah blah. Just an example of the other side of that coin - since day 1 post op I have never counted a darn thing, I've eaten what I pleased, do not monitor Water intake, and I sure as heck do not have a 'plan' about what I should do or not do. And guess what all that has gotten me?? I've lost just about all the weight I wanted to, I am healthy and strong, I have not stretched my sleeve, and I do not have huge issues with gaining weight. Sure sometimes I gain a pound or 4 just like everyone else. At that point I pay a bit more attention to what I am putting in my mouth and the extra pounds go away in a couple days. Then i get more donut holes. No worries - you'll do just great

OutsideMatchInside 10,166 Posted June 23, 2016 @@celibear I thought I would miss ginger ale and Kola Champagne so much I would implode, but I don't miss them. I don't even think about them really. I gave up soda couple years before surgery. I would have one, maybe once or twice a year in the time that I had given them up, but I have really just lost the taste for them. I was really addicted to carbonation. It felt so good on my throat. I got my allergies under control and without the post nasal drip down my throat all the time irritating me, I didn't need the carbonation to soothe my throat. I was self medicating in a way with carbonated drinks not really realizing it.

4MRB4PHOTO 3,900 Posted June 23, 2016 (edited) You should be able to enjoy those same foods again, just some less frequently and for all, in moderation. Yeah, you will savor the smaller amount of food you can eat. So instead of a huge burger and piles of sides, you have a half a hamburger or a burger without a bun (maybe wrapped with lettuce) and a little bit of the sides. You can take small amounts of the other items and enjoy all of the food's textures, flavors, smell, etc., instead of shoveling massive quantities down your gullet (no offense, I did that too). JennsJourney 205 Posted June 23, 2016 I felt the same way! I'm almost 5 months out and I do mostly low carb/high Protein but i have had a few cheats. I ate a very small piece of cake or a couple of bites of Pasta. I don't make this a habit because I know that carbs/sugar puts weight on me but nothing I have tried has made me sick. I just know that if I eat something I'm not supposed to, then I won't have enough room for all my Protein. But I can say that I can truly enjoy almost any food as long as I'm smart about it. And even when I have had a small cheat, it did not stall my weight loss but I didn't let that give me an excuse to continue making bad choices. Hope that give you a little encouragement!
