What Y'all Think: IX

Recommended Posts

It has been awhile since I have written a What Y'all Think. I have had a few ideas that I wanted to to explore, but then This American Life came through for me. This weeks episode of TAL was about being fat and according to to true TAL style they approached the topic from a few different angles. Bariatric surgery was not covered in the broadcast. It mostly centered around fat acceptance.

If you have the time I would encourage you to have a listen. It is more than an hour in length and it does include profanity, so keep those things in mind.

One of my motivating factors for having surgery was with the hope I would get married. I do not think fat people, if I may use that term, are necessarily ugly. Nor do I think thin people are necessarily beautiful. However, women of a more normal size have a higher chance of getting married. We may not like that. It paints men in an unflattering light, but it is true. I know that I have much to offer any man, but if my weight is a hindrance to that then perhaps I need to make a change and so I did by have VSG six months ago. I am sharing this because the idea of women losing weight to increase their chances of getting married is covered in the broadcast.

As always, let me know your thoughts.

@@1Cor2:9 I wonder if it is more to do with a boost of confidence after losing weight then it is your actual size/weight making you more attractive (and leading to marriage).

Ha, I think it is complex affair. The idea that only confident people have life partners is false. There are plenty of lo self esteem people running around who are married. One's confidence should not be rooted in one's appearance. I am somebody and have worth independent of my present size. ;)

What holds you back from being in a committed relationship then?

I think we are getting a little far from the original topic. I posted about This American Life broadcast that to be frank was about fat people. This episode covered many topics. Did you have a chance to listen to it? If so what did you think?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
