How Do You Stay Cool Without Ice Cream?

Recommended Posts

The standard list of cold summer treats may be a distant memory if you’re being a little – okay, a lot! – more cautious about your diet. Your weight loss surgery diet isn’t likely to include those cold treats like ice cream, root beer floats, ice cold soft drinks, and iced lattes. They’re way too sugary and high-calorie to have regularly.

Still, there are plenty of other cold treats that hit the spot, too. What do you do to stay refreshed, on track, and satisfied on hot days? I love frozen watermelon slush and sugar-free ice pops. Frozen bananas are a little higher in calories and carbs, but they’re way healthier than ice cream and still super healthy. What your summer secrets?

I still have ice cream if I want. But mostly I have lots of popsicles.

sugar free popsicles are my go-to right now, but there are so many Protein shakes out there that you can turn into a Protein milkshake - or even protein ice cream - that we aren't short of options.

I also found Arctic Zero ice cream, which is really not half bad.

I make smoothies:

1 scoop of vanilla Protein powder

1 handful of frozen tropical fruit

10 oz of flat diet soda--orange is my favorite

3 ice cubes

OR

I'll make a vanilla Protein shake with almond milk

add:

root beer extract

3 ice cubes

Tastes like a root beer float.

(I actually serve it in an A & W glass that I've had for many, many years. :)

Try it--you'll like it. :)

No sugar added Klondike bars! They are the perfect size, and just enough to satisfy! Also SF Popsicles. Some fresh fruit such as watermelon, honeydew. strawberries, blueberries...all when they are in season do wonders as well. Wonderfully sweet, juicy, and satisfying.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
