Appetite and intensity of your training

Recommended Posts

I weight lift HEAVILY and I am in pretty good shape. I find that the harder I train the more appetite I have. When I take breaks, or I lessen the intensity, I feel like my appetite goes down. I know the intensity is definitely affecting my hunger because I need to replenish what I'm losing in my workouts, but I am wondering what people do to curb the appetite that comes from training. Might sound like a dumb question, but I am just curious about other strategies that people are using.

I can't help you with the intense workout question, but this is the approach that I use in the "Maintenance" phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

I hear you. When I am marathon training I experience the same thing! Adding an extra Protein shake post workout helps. Or another high Protein snack-- a scoop of Protein powder in oatmeal, a Quest or Power Crunch bar. When I eat one of these things post workout it curbs my appetite somewhat for the rest of the day. I also find low calorie Snacks like cucumbers or snap peas to crunch on when I get the munchies. I'm lucky I'm in maintenance and can eat a bit more.

Keep track of the calories you burn in your workouts so you can eat them back. That helps too!

I only experienced this when I first began lifting. Over time as my body adapted to lifting, the hunger spikes leveled out. Occasionally there are time when I am hungrier than others and that's normal. Even nonWLS folks experience changes in appetite. In that case an extra snack like a Greek yogurt or whatever healthy item you like is fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
