Watch your iron levels!

Recommended Posts

I have been taking an Iron supplement daily, and not realizing my Bariatric Vit also had iron in it, as well as putting Kale in my Protein smoothies for my eyes....I had labs done last Monday and all was good except my iron level was high, which can be fatal......Be sure to monitor yours. I did not even know there was a possibility

That is scary. With any supplement, always have to know what is too much.

I'm wondering do I actually need to take the Iron supplement. I'm post-menopause and I believe they said for menstruating women to take?

I have to ask this at my next visit I guess.

I attended support group at my surgeon's office last night and we discussed Vitamins. They only recommend Iron if menstruating or labs indicate it's low. Hopefully I won't need it...it constipates me!

I don't have a problem with the Iron constipating me, but I was taking it in the morning with my multi-Vitamin, B12 sublingual, bp med, and probiotic. I had to wait to take my Calcium pills at that point because the Iron can interfer with absorption. So you are supposed to take them at least 2 hours apart. Problem is I would take my Calcium pills with me, and then forget to take them! So, since I don't menstruate anymore, do I need the iron more or the calcium. I'm thinking the calcium.

Because of the spacing of my Calcium, I never get them in and yet my calcium levels were good..whew!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
