Anthrogeeke 12 Posted June 18, 2016 I am currently scheduled for a RNY on July 13th. I'm questioning if I should switch to a sleeve. I know I need to come to the decision that works best for me, but I'm interested in why others choose the sleeve or RNY. Sophie74656 1,572 Posted June 18, 2016 there are probably 5 million threads about this, many different opinions. I chose the sleeve because I didn't want the unused part of my stomach just hanging around in my body with no way to access it if there are any issues. I also did not like the idea of the malabsorption aspect and the extra supplements you will need. Also did not want to deal with dumping (yes it can also happen with the sleeve but less common). For me I liked the idea of just making your stomach smaller much better than the idea of the rerouting that goes with the bypass. Also my surgeon and I talked about the options and he suggested the sleeve
anniebanana 167 Posted June 18, 2016 @@Anthrogeeke Both surgeries are effective tools for weight loss. RNY is considered "the gold standard" by many surgeons, as it has been around much longer and they have been able to track its effectiveness over a longer period of time than the sleeve. The sleeve is less invasive, but the % of average weight lost with RNY surgery is slightly higher than the sleeve. The RNY is reversible in some circumstances. The sleeve is not. The sleeve is not necessarily a good choice for anyone who has a problem with acid reflux. It's not easy wondering if you are making the "right" choice, but at the end of the day, you have to do what you are comfortable with. For me, I chose the sleeve simply because it is less invasive. It may not be the best reason, but that was how I arrived at my decision. Good luck!

Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted June 19, 2016 Talk to your surgeon about what is right for you. I chose the sleeve and couldn't be happier.
Beck90 189 Posted June 19, 2016 In addition to everything others have said here.. I prefer the sleeve over RNY/bypass because they use a different part of your stomach to make the sleeve which makes it less prone to stretching. Bypass uses part of the fundus - top of the stomach - which is a lot more stretchy and it also produces the ghrellin hormone which causes hunger.. the sleeve uses only the non stretchy part of the stomach and removes the ghrellin-producing part. I'm super happy that I chose the sleeve.
beyondgrief 93 Posted June 19, 2016 I'm good getting rid of extra I don't need. I'm not as comfortable rerouting what I feel is put together on purpose. My surgeon said sleeve can have same results but since it's newer the time they have to research long term loss has skewed results. Working beyond grief for a better life! Anthrogeeke 12 Posted July 7, 2016 Thanks everyone for the feedback. I really appreciate it. I had a long talk with my surgeon and we both agreed the sleeve was the best option for me given my tendency to be naturally low on Iron, the fact I'm on high doses of steroids 2 to 3 times a year for asthma (unrelated to my weight), and no history of GERD. I'm scheduled for July 13th. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App
