Sleep Apnea Sleep Study

Recommended Posts

Hello! I had my first appointment with my surgeon yesterday only to find out the with a BMI of 36, I need a comorbidity and 6 months nutrition training. I scored "borderline" on the sleep apnea survey, so I'm being sent to have a sleep study done. I snore loudly, but I'm not sure if that constitutes obstructive sleep apnea. Anyways, just curious about anyone's experience with a sleep study and an obstructive sleep apnea and sleep studies.

The threshold for being diagnosed with apnea is actually pretty low. "Normal" people have 5 breathing pauses or fewer per hour. I had 6, and was diagnosed with apnea and put on a CPAP. I had no signs or symptoms of apnea, and was astonished at the diagnosis, so it's entirely possible with the snoring that you will wind up with that diagnosis. The sleep study is painless but awkward and uncomfortable. The home study requires that you wear a device strapped to your chest, an oxygen monitor on your index finger, and a breathing tube strapped to your nose. I slept very poorly for both studies, so I am guessing their readings weren't reflective of what they would be for a regular night for me. I have not had an inpatient sleep study, but my understanding (from my husband, who has done one) is that they attach several wires, etc. to you and monitor your sleep throughout the night. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
