Tommy Joe 113 Posted June 17, 2016 Just read the mini bypass has a risk of bile reflux developing? Wondering if I should just go ahead and get the full r n y and be done with it? My mini is scheduled in Mexico for June 27, would switching cause major differences? I will talk to the folks there tomorrow. Just with all my reflux issues don't want to take a chance to get it after. What say you all?
James Marusek 5,244 Posted June 17, 2016 I am really not familiar with the mini-gastric bypass. I do know they are very different operations. I had RNY gastric bypass and I had severe acid reflux (GERD) prior to surgery. I am 3 years post-op RNY and GERD is no longer a problem. According to this link, it appears your fears may have some foundation (mini gastric bypass can be a problem for GERD patients). http://www.obesitycoverage.com/mini-gastric-bypass-the-good-bad-and-ugly/ But then again Bile Reflux is different than Acid Reflux (GERD). Biliary reflux, bile reflux or duodenogastric reflux is a condition that occurs when bile flows upward (refluxes) from the duodenum into the stomach and esophagus. Biliary reflux can be confused with acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Learningtolive 109 Posted June 17, 2016 I don't know much about it but do your research and talk with the surgeon/team to determine the best for your personally. That's how I'd handle that. After my RNY I had gastric reflux apparently (didn't feel like it) that was found via a barium test due to frequent vomiting from week 2 until about 4 months post-surgery. It wasn't the cause of the vomiting, that was due to my esophagus randomly spasming.
