I used to have frequent, severe heartburn, but over the past year, I have had very few episodes, controlled largely by diet.

It is so weird, since I started the WLS process, I have had several episodes. A couple that have been really bad! I am concerned that when my surgeon does the EGD he's going to see damage in my esophagus from all the reflux and deny me the sleeve and want me to have bypass. Bypass seems to be much harder to deal with than the sleeve! But I also don't want awful reflux and heartburn for the rest of my life!

Is there anyone with heartburn and reflux prior to the sleeve that has any experience or advice that they can share?

A few months ago I was diagnosed with acid reflux and I didn't even know I had it. I've been having trouble with hoarseness and decided to go to a Gastro Doc. He told me that in addition to the reflux I also had an ulcer again something I did not know about. So for both conditions I've been on medicine to heal the ulcer but reflux medicine will actually be for the rest of my life.

Just recently I decided to explore WLS and had my 1st appointment the other day. The surgeon told me I would need another endoscopy to see if anything has healed before I can move ahead with other testing. I know I have given you too much info but it is important to treat your heartburn because eventually it can cause bigger problems with your esophagus and may even cause cancer.

Also the surgeon says that he too does the endoscopy before surgery and if he finds anything or the area hasn't healed he'll either reschedule or cancel it completely. Your doc maybe different but figured I'd I'll let you know.

Sorry for the very long response.

@@traydog thanks for the info. That is exactly my fear is that I will have an ulcer or something worse that will delay or prevent the surgery. I have my EGD in July, so I guess I will find out then!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
