rebcal 32 Posted June 15, 2016 Hey guys. I know this question is asked a lot but please bare with me! I'm about 2 months out and I'm wondering how many calories roughly I should be consuming a day. As of now, I take about 500-700 calories a day, my highest calorie intake was about 850. Is that normal? I don't know what the normal range is for calories. Also, every time I eat I make myself aware of how many calories I'm eating and even if I'm not full yet, I'll stop earlier so as to not go over. I'm nervous about gaining weight or not losing because I'm eating too much (even though I know I'm not) it just feels like it. Anyway, sorry again. I know this is a known question but it's been bothering me for a while now. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
rebcal 32 Posted June 15, 2016 I know everyone's probably going to kill me but I also haven't had a Protein drink/ shake since last month. I keep worrying that if I have too many calories-- from the protein-- it won't go as fast or not at all. I know it's crazy. And probably wrong don't yell ???? KristenLe 5,979 Posted June 15, 2016 I believe your Protein intake is more important than calories but 500-700 seems on the low side. You're more apt not lose if you're eating too little. How much protein are you getting?
KristenLe 5,979 Posted June 15, 2016 By limiting your calories - your body will go into starvation mode and your metabolism all messed up. You need Protein.
rebcal 32 Posted June 15, 2016 I'm getting Protein in more with foods (eggs, fish, beans) rather than the shakes. I definitely don't make my goal of 70 grams of Protein a day though. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Sophie74656 1,572 Posted June 15, 2016 What does your plan say? What did your nutritionist tell you?
Kindle 8,667 Posted June 15, 2016 At your stage calories are not a number you need to be worrying about at all. All you need to be concerned with is taking your Vitamins, getting 60-80g of Protein and at least 64oz of Water (80-100 is better especially if you are in a warm climate) every day. That's it. It's that simple. If you are still hungry after getting all your Protein then throw in some low starch veggies or a couple bites of fruit. It's great you are eating high protein foods, but if you can't get all your protein that way then go ahead and throw in a shake. I still drink them 2 1/2 years out. (Drinking a 24oz banana milk shake with 25g protein as I type this) Like Kristen said, if you continue to limit your calories because you are afraid to eat you will 1) put yourself into a stall 2) screw up your metabolism, making maintenance that much more difficult and 3) possibly develop an eating disorder. The only time my calories were below 600 was the first week postop.
eclecticwingtips 130 Posted June 15, 2016 Im 6 weeks out and consume between 500 to 600 calories a day. I am getting decent nutrients and the only way i could eat more is snacking which is a no no with my surgeon so im pretty happy. The weight is coming off which is the important thing Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk
SeahawksFan 444 Posted June 15, 2016 I agree I have never focused on calories. Just Protein, Water, and my Vitamins. I still have shakes and Protein Bars. Especially when I am out and about. I keep them in my purse for emergencies. I also keep Justins organic Peanut Butter packs and almonds. I eat every 3 hours to keep that metabolism going. ~LA
PrincessKeeper3 12 Posted June 19, 2016 I asked my doc to give me a limit at that stage, and he said 1200 calories. I now eat around 1400 a day usually. I noticed when i got around 1000, I felt a TON better. But agree with the others, focus on the Protein first! You need to get that in.
