sleeverv 43 Posted June 14, 2016 My surgeon is not allowing me to drink Protein until week 5 because of leakages. I asked her in an email why I can't introduce Protein until week five and this is what she says : it is to prevent leakage because of the consistency of protein. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
cindyw41 761 Posted June 14, 2016 My doctor did a leakage test before I could drink anything. After I got the clearance I was able to be on a full liquid diet. Did they do a leakage check while you were in the hospital? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Has anyone else ever experienced this? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App No. My surgeon administered a leak test right after surgery before he closed me up and then the next day. I was able to drink liquids, including protein supplements before I left the hospital. I was required to get 100 grams of protein a day starting the day after surgery. I was sipping for a while. I cannot imagine that Protein shakes could ever cause a leak. According to my surgeon, most post-op leaks are caused by steroid use.

That's what I thought but she says hat studies show that many post op leaks are caused by people drinking protein too soon. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Even if you are on clear liquids, you should still be getting in your Protein. Try Isopure clear, ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates, Syntrax nectar, bone broth, and/or other clear Protein supplements. I was allowed Premier Protein during my clear phase. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I would be curious to see those studies. It is my understanding that protein is critical for healing. I would think that NOT drinking protein would be more likely to cause leaks.

NeedaBreak4Me 1,755 Posted June 14, 2016 (edited) That is extremely odd... are you sure she doesn't mean eating Protein.... Protein promotes healing. .. so i am suprised she said this. I would call the clinic and clarify and ask for the studies she is referring to. It is the first ive ever heard of it... it seems drinking Protein drinks post op is standard practice around the world. Doesn't sound right to me We were on pureed food as soon as we were discharged.... and i am still alive.. so i don't know what she is talking about... unless you have complications Edited June 14, 2016 by AussieGirl81

sleeverv 43 Posted June 14, 2016 No complications at all. I am 99.9% sure that she meant all Proteins including shakes because I specifically asked her. But just to be 100% sure I just emailed her again. When she answered I will respond to this email. I thought it was strange too. I asked her where will I get my energy from and she said you'll be surprised the body is amazing
helenpgh 81 Posted June 14, 2016 I had a leak test in the hospital before drinking anything. Then I was on clear liquids for 2 weeks after my surgery with no Protein. Then after 2 weeks I started on puréed food and Protein Shakes. I had my surgery at Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh which is a center of excellence for Bariatric surgery.
