Enriched milk stalling weight loss?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I had gastic sleeve surgery May 31st. For the first week I struggled badly to take in my Protein count. Most days I was lucky to get 20g a day. The Protein shakes were disagreeing with me and the flavorless Protein I bought was far from flavorless (yuck!). My nutritionist urged me to make enriched milk using powdered non-fat milk mixed with skim milk. I have been using this the last week in cream Soups and with sugar free pudding or coffee and im finally hitting my protein goals.

But, my weight loss totally stopped. I lost 16lbs the first week and nothing the last 7 days despite the fact that I have gone back to work and been much more active. I have no idea why it has stopped. My calorie count is exceptionally low... less than 500 a day. Im drinking only Water. Im not cheating at all. What gives!?! Any thoughts???

Soooo frustrated!

You may not be eating enough. 500 calories a day IS extremely low. I wouldn't worry about the enriched milk if it is helping you get in your Protein.

Your priority right now is healing. Getting enough Protein and Fluid is critical for healing and weight loss.

None of us lose at a constant or steady rate. We all experience stalls and slow downs in weight loss. Almost everyone experiences a stall about three weeks after surgery.

I highly recommend that you stay off the scale, especially if you are still struggling to get in enough nutrition.

Stop doing this to yourself, In the initial four to six weeks, your body has one overriding objective: to heal from major abdominal surgery.

You and your head may think weight loss is the be-all-end-all, but your body needs to heal FIRST.

Get in your fluids. Get in your Protein, however you can do it. do the best you can. And stay off the scale. It isn't going to be your friend right now. The weight loss will come, but it isn't a race. Treat your body with respect and kindness, it's been through a lot lately.

You are both absolutely right, I know that I keep forgetting that I just had major surgery. I guess I am just frustrated being still 2 weeks away from being about to eat pureed food. I feel like I should be dropping weight like crazy since I am killing myself eating the same two things everyday. Protein shake, Soup, Protein Shake, soup.... over and over. I just want a scrambled egg or some tuna fish so bad... still two more weeks. Sorry to whine Im just feeling a bit discouraged.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
