All Insurance Info Upfront or Upon Request?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am doing a little research before I submit my paperwork. Is it better to send all information upfront (i.e. physician letter, medical records, documentation, etc) or should I send a physician summary letter first and then submit the rest of the info if asked? By the way, my insurance carrier is Aetna, my plan is Aetna Choice POS II. Any information is appreciated

Soon to be

Send in everything you have right away. You are only allowed so many appeals, and you don't want to waste one because they deny you rather then ask for more info. I would call and find out exactly what is required and submit at least the minimum requirements. I also submitted a personal letter about the pain I suffered from my weight. (knee, back and emotional pain) I called Inamed and sent in a Lap-Band packet too as my insurance considered the band experimental. ~Mandy

Absolutely correct, Mandy. Skinny, Aetna has a detailed list of their requirements readily available and you should refer to that to make sure you've done your homework. Your doctor, in any event, is the one who will make the request for surgical precertification (not you), so HE is the one who should marshall ALL the paperwork and details to present to Aetna. All you can do is help get it together, keep copies of everything, and call Aetna three days after your doctor says it was submitted to make SURE it's been received.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
