What to bring to the hospital?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm having surgery next Monday the 13th and I need help about what I might need during my stay at the hospital. Also what kind of clothes I should wear. Thank you.

You really won't need much. An extra long charger cord for your phone, some lip balm, and a cotton, fasten-in-front no-underwire bra if you have one (and if you are one of the women who is more comfortable walking around with a bra than without). The hospital will be able to supply any toiletries that you need, but if you prefer your own tooth brush and so on, feel free to bring that.

If you wear glasses, bring a case for them.

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes. Bring a couple of pairs of undies but otherwise you can wear the same clothes home. I wore a loose-fitting empire waist dress and it was perfect.

Make sure that whoever is giving you a ride home brings a pillow for you to put between the seat belt and your abdomen.

I took way too much. The first day, I just slept it off. The second day, I watched TV and did not even feel like reading the book I brought. I did work some with my crossword puzzle book.

If I had a cell phone I probably would have taken that.

Wear loose clothes because you may be a bit bloated and swollen after surgery and IV liquids.

What was helpful was basic toiletries like my toothbrush, clippers, tweezers, Chapstick, breath strips, slippers, robe.

also a laptop/tablet to watch Netflix on & headphones. I'd probably ask my husband to bring the laptop after surgery so it's not just sitting on the floor somewhere waiting to be stolen

For me I am bringing my, phone, iPad, chargers. Change of comfy clothing.

Might bring my own pillow.

That's all for now, unless I think of something else.

The best thing I brought to the hospital was a pair of Bose noise cancelling earbuds and my phone/iPad with some music and videos. I didn't watch too many videos because I really wanted to sleep much of the time but those noise cancelling earbuds cut out all the noise of the hospital, alarms from the IV pumps, and people constantly coming in and out of the room. I could put on some music I downloaded at home and sleep peacefully -- so much so that people had to touch me to wake me up! I didn't really need anything else -- clothes to wear home. I also had my comfy slippers for walking the halls, but they gave me non-slip socks so I didn't really need them.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
