Had DS Tuesday 060716, am having a really hard time taking my vitamins and drinking enough protein. I feel like I am about to vomit all the time...

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 4 days ago and did really well in the hospital, the surgery went well and I was released by a little after noon the next day. Since I have been home I am having the hardest time ingesting my Vitamins, medications and the Protein that I am required to consume, along with the Water. I am feeling very nauseated all the time and have to force myself to drink as required. The tastes are fine, I actually like the Protein Drinks I love drinking water and was a 96 oz a day person for the past 5 years. I am really struggling getting everything down. I have not vomited, I just feel like I am going to. I have a pretty bad hiatal hernia hernia and stage 3 Barrett's esophagus so I really need to avoid vomiting. I just don't know what I can do to make the nausea stop. I have taken my prescribed promethicone and am using gas ex and tums....

Right after surgery your body is in a major heal mode. Therefore it is common for individuals to be unable to meet their daily Fluid and Protein requirements. Just keep working toward it and you should eventually get there in a few weeks.

After my RNY surgery, everything tasted different. I couldn't even drink the Water in the hospital because it tasted excessively chlorinated. Then when I got home I couldn't drink milk because I became lactose intolerant. Eventually after a couple months that condition went away. Also I lost my ability to swallow even medium size pills. So it was rough at the beginning. I used a pill splitter and pill crusher. I found that sometimes experimentation led to solutions. For example the use of hot or cold fluids. Hot tea went down easier than plain Water.< /p>

What vitamins/minerals are you taking? What kind of Protein?

I didn't take many pills in the beginning. It was chewable things or crushed pills in applesauce or yogurt. I was on puréed foods for several weeks. If you PM me your email addy I can email you the docs my surgical team distributed for the first month postop. Maybe they can help you out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
