Soft food to 'real food' ideas

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on May 15 so I'm very nearly 4 weeks post op. At 16 days post op Dr said I could start on soft foods and then a week after that on 'real foods'. I began but had trouble and progress went a little backwards ie. I could barely drink or eat. I went to the dr and he said it happens sometimes and it could be spasms so he gave me some medication and that everyone progresses differently. I've only been able to eat one square of cream cheese and a yoghurt a day with very little fluids. I tried scrambled egg but it didnt sit well. I was able to have two teaspoons of mashed potatoes and carrots at one point. I had to go back to work 2 weeks post op so obviously with a long work day and very little fluids im been feeling very weak. Did anyone else experience this?

Suddenly yesterday I was able to have an evening 'meal' and drink a lot more in the last 2 days. I'm excited this might mean I'm ready to eat and drink better. I want to be able to get more Protein in rather than depend on dairy. Can anyone help give me some food ideas for the soft food to real food phase? I paid for the surgery myself and I'm not in the US so do not have access to a nutrionist. Just wanted some ideas to keep me going.

Thanks!

I was sleeved on May 10th, so I'm just a few days ahead of you. Fish is really sitting well with me right now. I've especially been enjoying tuna and salmon. I'll cook up some fillets, or I'll make a tuna salad with some light mayo. I also really like the ricotta bake (recipe on the eggface blog). And I am really loving the taste of hummus right now, even if I do have bad garlic breath. I like scrambled eggs too, but I know you said it didn't sit well for you. How well cooked was it? I tend to cook mine so they are soft, but my husband cooks them too long and then they're harder and less pleasant. Other things I've eaten include refried Beans, soft cheeses, mashed sweet potato, and avocado. Hope that helps!

Thank you! Great ideas. About to try homous now. I'm worried about the heaviness of the chickpeas and their tendency to bloat?

Ditto the fish comment; I could eat grilled tuna, salmon, halibut or swordfish 7 days a week. There's a Japanese restaurant in town that has a seared tuna tataki appetizer which is just the perfect size for my stomach. Soft foods... Guacamole, chill, homemade Soups (I could eat Soup the other seven days a week), French toast, crab cakes...

Fish is excellent. Another option that I use is Gene Pro Protein powder. Flavorless and 30gr per table spoon.. I add it to lots of things like Soups and eggs and tuna salad and egg salad and pinto Beans and wendys chili. You get the picture. I use it just to boost what I already do not as the sole source of Protein.

Give it a try.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
