When to start exercising?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I am at 3 weeks post opp or 21 days after surgery. I have hit a stall with a 3 pound gain, and I was wondering when would be a good time to start exercising. I have not been told by my Dr. to do so yet, though I am at work already, but not allowed to pick up anything. I was wondering if anyone could share when they started to exercise, and if it improved their results, or if they experienced any issues because of doing so. What types of exercise was done, etc... this could all be very helpful for me, and I am sure to others as well.

Thank you.

I'm also 3 weeks post-op (5/16). While I'm not cleared for lifting, I know that walking is just fine. That's probably a great type of exercise to start with.

Don't dwell over that 3lb weight gain just yet. And remember that losing weight, 80% is diet, 20% exercise. There are some that get to goal with very little exercise.

And I know telling you now to dwell on that 3 lbs is crazy to actually do! Also, remember that at 3 weeks, it's the time when most have their first stall... the body is catching up with all of the loss. Could that time of the month be playing into the weight gain? Have you been drinking enough Water? How long has the 3 lbs been around?

I'd also like to see what others say about exercise. I'm around 3 weeks as well and i've hit the week 3 stall. I'm in the same boat with not cleared to exercise other than walking. Trying to get into a routine to do that and increase my distance, since it seems that is all I can do for now.

I'm 8 weeks post op (RNY) and have not been able to exercise due to a terrible Sciatica. I'm in physical therapy working on resolving it. I want to walk but I also have low energy. I'm anxious to get energy back.

I started exercising weeks before my surgery. I was not ready for anything intense after surgery. Walking is OK on day one of surgery. Walking as far as you can is important. You don't have to walk very fast, but the duration matters. If you can only manage walking around a store then do that. Your body needs it.

Getting into an exercise routine early is CRITICAL to long term success. Try to get your head straight and accept that exercise is an every day task. This will NEVER change.

I was cleared by my doctor for all exercise as tolerated at my four week follow up.

Started Couch to 5k at that point and yoga.

I've been walking, riding the bike and doing circuit training and I'm pre surgery but I want to be as healthy as possible before my RNY in 9 days. I'm hoping I will be cleared to exercise soon after surgery because all of the 3 week stall I'm reading about is a little scary.

Don't sweat the stalls. In the early days, stalls will freak you out, but rest assured, they pass and are usually accompanied by a BIG loss. You'll be losing quite a bit in the weeks after surgery without working out at full intensity. Please remember that no amount of exercise can prevent a stall. Your body doesn't care how hard you are trying. It has its own schedule and it makes absolutely no sense at all.

I am so glad that I followed the recommendations about exercise prior to surgery and after surgery. They make all the difference in how you will look and feel as you lose.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
