I seriously doubt it, but definitely talk to your surgeon.

Why would you want to? In my opinion, you need to be as healthy as possible going into surgery.

UGH, I just HATE the sanctimonious hate for phentermine around here! ESPECIALLY from people who had to resort to major surgery to be used as a tool to aid in the fight against obesity. It's just another TOOL.

Definitely ask your team. I had to stop taking it at least 24 hours before surgery. You are also supposed to wean yourself off of it instead of stopping cold turkey so keep that in mind

I would call your surgeon - as mentioned above - you should wean off of it. It most likely needs to be stopped before surgery.

Well it can affect your heart...not sure I'd want to take a chance going into surgery about that but your doctors may not allow it anyway so soon before surgery but they would definitely be the ones to ask.

Check with your surgeon but.... A dear friend was having surgery (totally unrelated to weight loss) and when the doc found out she's been taking phentermine he postponed the urgent procedure until she's been off it for 2 weeks. Apparently it doesn't mix well with the anesthesia and can cause major complications. Check with your surgeon!

All medications have risks. It's up to the doctor and patient to weigh the benefits vs risks in a particular case and make an educated decision together.

Sanctimonious is trying to make that decision for someone else.

How long have you been on your liquid diet? After day 3-4 I was no longer hungry or having cravings. You may not even need it to suppress your appetite

I understand the desire to take it, but it isn't safe. I briefly took a low dose of phentermine in my early 20s, and had to stop taking it before having my wisdom teeth removed because of concerns it could negatively interact with anesthesia. There was a medical paper published that same year about a woman who had a hypertensive crisis during surgery, and it was believed to have been due to her use of phentermine.

We describe the case of a woman who had two penroperative hypertensive crises that may have been due to her use of phentermine, a little-known sympathomimetic anti-obesity medication. The currently available anti-obesity medications are discussed: phentermine, diethylpropion, and sibutramine; all of which are sympathomimetics possessing noradrenaline and serotonin reuptake inhibitor activity. These medications should be discontinued one week preoperatively and have potential interactions with tramadol and antidepressants. The drug orlistat inhibits gastrointestinal lipase and may lead to fat soluble Vitamin (A, D, E, and K) deficiency, so consideration should be given to checking coagulation status preoperatively.

You're right my word choice poor--and I apologize. It's just that calling it a dangerous tool is judgmental though, it's coming to a conclusion about the risks vs benefits that should be left to the physician, in my not so humble opinion.

No, phentermine is not a life saving medication. Opinions aren't "judgmental" - they are shared opinions in response to someone asking a question. Our opinion is that phentermine is dangerous - that's not being sanctimonious. If people don't want others opinions then please don't ask. Phentermine can cause significant complications during surgery. As everyone said - of course discuss with the surgeon.
