B12 for Bypass patients

Recommended Posts

How much B12 do you take every day? My viewable multi has 500mcg and I take a supplemental 1000mcg sublingual 4 times a week. My B12 is high though (almost 1300). My papers and NUT all said 1000mcg per day (I came down to 4 times per week because my last test was too high). My surgeon says it is only 1000mcg per WEEK not per DAY. But she also said there is no danger in having too much as you just pee it out (expensive pee ????). Yes I know this is a question for my NUT and/or surgeon but just curious of others experience / advice

I take 2500 mcg per day.

Yes excess does wiz out, but it does help the fatigue during first few months after surgery.

I may cut back on dose after I start eating more meats.

The 500 in your multi isn't doing anything as you have little, if any, of the intrinsic factor in your pouch to absorb it. Beyond that, you need as much as you need to keep your levels up and you are doing more than well there (IIRC, 1000 is the top end of the "normal" range, depending on which test is done.) The papers provided by your surgeon will be an initial catch-all recommendation for all, which should then be tailored by your lab results, which certainly indicates that you can cut back. The once a week that your surgeon suggests is probably good advice until your next round of labs indicates otherwise, or you start feeling anemic/lethargic.

I take a 5000 mcg sublingual tablet once a week.

high B12 levels seem to be pretty common and as far as I know, aren't harmful. Mine has been in about the same range yours has ever since surgery, and no one at the surgeon's office has ever said anything. There are a couple of vets on another bariatric surgery forum that I'm on who've said they feel crummy if their levels fall below 1000. So who knows? But I'm sure your surgeon's office would have said something if they were worried. I actually see numbers like that posted pretty often (because people are worried when they first see that) - so I think it's pretty common.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
