I have a stricture 3 weeks post op.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I am 3 weeks and 1 day post op gastric bypass RNY. I have noticed that in the past several days (roughly a week) I cannot consume anything without feeling horrible. I feel like things are stuck. It doesn't matter if it is less than 1 ounce of food. I get tons of thick saliva in my mouth and I am a prisoner to that feeling until it passes maybe 20 minutes later. I have no appetite and I can't even think about eating. I finally called my surgeon and the nurse is almost positive it's a stricture and will need a second procedure to expand my esophagus. Has anyone had experienced with a stricture. I believe it will be an endoscopic procedure with balloon dilation. The RN said just stay hydrated until the procedure. If I cannot eat, not a problem. She doesn't want me vomiting or making it worse. I don't know what went wrong; I followed the diet to a tee and lost 35lbs. I guess these complications just happen. Just want advice.

Thanks for listening!

I'm 4 weeks post op and just had my stricture dilated today. Instant relief! I had been vomiting for a full week but was able to drink fluids. Yesterday I quit being able to hold down any fluids. They got me in right away and did an endoscopy with balloon dilation. Made my throat sore but nausea is gone and I can drink! I have to start over on the diet stages though but I'm fine with that! Good luck and hope you feel better!

You did nothing to cause your stricture, it's just a side effect that happens in a small amount of people. I have a slight stricture myself. It started around week 4-5. My doctor thought it might just resolve itself. I am now just over 11 weeks and seems to be getting slightly better the last few days.

For instance, I can now eat 1oz of turkey deli meat and a cheese stick for a meal. I could have never got that down even a week or so ago.

I still drink a lot of my Protein (40g a day through drinks). The other 20g I can now get from food. (60g is my target). For many weeks, the only food I could tolerate was cottage cheese.< /p>

That makes me so much happier knowing that it may resolve. God, it's bad right now. I feel so much relief and hope for that. Thank you.

My doctor told me that if it got worse or didn't resolve itself he would do the dilation. He said it was simple and was extremely confident he would be able to resolve it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
