Hello, I am new to the forum. I am seriously considering lap band surgery. I have tried every diet known to man it seems like with always the same result: lose some weight, then gain it all back plus some. I go for the lap band seminar on August 28th in Louisville, KY. I have contacted my insurance company and I am very fortunate that it looks like they are going to pay for it if i decide to get the surgery. i think i can deal with the lifestyle/eating changes i will have to make. I just have one hang up, and thats the no drinking with meals issue. Does everyone find this extremely difficult? This may sound silly but if you eat something thats hot and burn your mouth can't you at least take a sip of something??

Thanks for the great posts in this forum they have been very helpful. :)

Welcome to the forum Techjunkie!

I'm only a little over 2 weeks post op so I've been eating a lot of Soups. But for the past couple days I found it only difficult to restrain from drinking when eating with other people who are drinking while eating. Otherwise, if I'm eating alone or with my boyfriend who knows about my surgery, it's not so hard not having a drink with my meals, just don't have a glass of anything in front of you. Somehow, once I have had the band in me I feel more conscious about my decisions and feel a bit reluctant to break any rules for fear of messing up the band. As for hot or spicy foods, since you'll have to learn to take small bites, you'll know from your first small bite of food if your meal is going to be too spicy or too hot to eat. Hope this helps!

Citygirlnks, thanks for the info. about how long was the process for you from time of seminar if you had to attend one to the actual surgery, and did insurance pay or are you self pay. i am fully prepared to pay if my insurance denies my claim for whatever reason but just trying to get a grasp on how much money it is. Seems like a lot of posts i have read put it between $10-$25K but thats a pretty broad range.

Hi! I am from Clarksville Indiana and went to the seminar in Lou. Ky. Found out my insurance would not pay and went to Mexico for 8,000 total. That is air fare and all. It was great. Hospital and hotel were beautiful and clean. Had a great time. Dr Zapata was the best!!! Best of luck. Donna

Hello,

It has been a little over 3 months since I got banded. I was like you, worried about the drinking during meals. When eating at home I just don't have a glass on the table, when eating out I order Water. I sip on it up unit I order my meal, then set it to the side. It is there in case I choke or something. At home I find it helps to eat a SF popsicle after I finish eating, helps if I am thirsty.

Good luck......

I went to a mandatory seminar at the end of June, had my consultation that very next week and then had my surgery at the end of July. So, about a month. I was a self pay patient. I could have had the surgery earlier I imagine except my surgeon was booked up until the end of the month from the time of my consultation. My total cost was 16K. I had a great experience overall. I loved my surgeon, had minimal pain, enjoyed my stay at the hospital, went home with almost no gas pains, some soreness that went away in about a week and a half.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
