Will I eventually be able to eat more?

Recommended Posts

Right now, 3 weeks after VSG, I get so full on so little food that I'm wondering how this is going to change. I know this is a good thing now, but at some point in the future I would like to be able to eat a full hot dog and bun with Condiments, one of my favorite foods.

yes - you will be able to eat more at 3 months, and at 6 months more still - and at 12 and 18 months, so, as long as your hot dog is an occasional treat and not a regularly occurring meal, you will probably be able to do so without any issue once you are in the maintenance phase.

at almost 4 months I think I could probably manage half one. I'm not going to try though as I am still in the weight loss phase.

Well, I wouldn't be in a rush to eat the whole hot dog & bun until you've reached your goal -- but no reason you can't shoot for half of one... If you're satisfied, that's enough, right?

Seriously, I'm just ahead of you -- about 5 weeks out. My personal experience was that at 2-3 weeks I could barely eat 1.5 oz. of food. Today I find I'm quite comfortable with 2.5 oz. of lean Protein -- maybe 3 oz. but that's pushing it. The amazing thing is that even with so little I'm perfectly satisfied. I used to still be hungry 5 minutes after finishing a big meal. Gotta love the difference.

I used to love going to a great restaurant and having the Chef's tasting meal. Instead I'm just going to have to settle for being a normal size and enjoying an appetizer. I can definitely live with the trade-off.

You will be able to eat more as time goes by, but don't be in a rush.

I still can't eat a whole hot dog with bun and Condiments. We rarely eat them anyway. Usually I will eat about 1/4 of the bun and all the dog, which is still a tad too much for comfort. My most comfortable maximum intake is about 2/3 - 3/4 of a cup total. Two bites too many and I'm miserable for about a hour.

I'm just short of three months post op. My hot dog fix is a low fat pooch (45 cals) and some low fat turkey chili (another 50 cals) with a sprinkling of cheese on top. Not quite the same but I'm trying to keep the carbs low.

Yes after a few months the swelling goes down and you can eat a little more. I am 8 months post op and can't eat a whole hot dog with the bun...but isn't that the point of surgery?

No, never. You will only be able to eat 3 bites of food for the rest of your life.

Haha just kidding. You will wish for those days down the road sometimes. Believe me at almost 2 years out and able to eat a cup of food sometimes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
