Hello everyone,

I'm new to this group. Just started the process of vsg. Making an appointment after my passport arrives with Dr. Fernando Garcia. Very nervous! My family is NOT on board with me flying to Mexico for surgery. I'm going anyway. CW 244 goal weight is 150. Height 5'6". 44 years old. Just wanted to see if there are any women my age that are undergoing the same procedure or gave done so. Is it harder for a women in her 40's to recover from surgery does age affect the success?

I was 47 when I had my surgery. No complications, a relatively easy recovery, and successful weight loss. I think I was tired for longer than I would have been if I had this surgery in my 20's, but not a big deal. As you age, and especially after menopause, you need fewer and fewer calories to maintain your weight and thus of course fewer calories to lose weight, just due to loss of muscle mass. So eventually we will all need to be even more vigilant and committed to our eating and exercise plans as we age, but that doesn't mean we can't all be successful. Just don't go comparing yourself to a 25 year old, 6'2 man and expect to lose at the same rate, unfortunately ;)

On the other hand, no offense to our younger members here, but having been around the block a few times does give us a bit more perspective and tools to deal with changes and setbacks IMO, so in some ways we have an advantage. And there are plenty of people here significantly older than us who have had tons of success!

Congrats for getting everything set up and ready! I have a friend who was in her 60s when she had her VSG. She felt that she was tired a little bit longer than she's expecting me to be (I'm in my early 30s), but recovered well. Her scars healed magnificently, and she actually doesn't have much loose skin to speak of - she used moisturizers as soon as her doc gave her the okay. She's 5'8" and was around 240 and is now 160.

Good luck!

That's great that you are set up with Dr. Garcia. I am 56 and just had VSG with him 2 weeks ago. Everything went great and I am excited to be able to start my puréed food stage tomorrow. Best of luck to you!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
