Hey all I'm new to this support group but I'm hoping I can find some stress relief here. I haven't gotten approved yet through my insurance. My surgeon told me that my BMI is too low... 37... And he'll need to convince them. I have PCOS and a couple other medical issues so he really thinks I should get the surgery. Also, I've worked so hard to lose the pre-surgery weight (33lbs) and now I feel like I screwed myself.

Has anyone else been in this situation and how did it turn out?

I had 35 BMI and insurance would not cover so I went to Tijuana and self-payed for the surgery. I am 2 weeks post op and all is well so far.

The weight they hopefully will submit to the insurance is the one at the time of consult... Way to go on the 33lb????

What are your other medical conditions? That will most likely determine if approved.

I have PCOS and 4 herniated discs in my back, 2 of which already got operated on. My doctor kept assuring me it'll get approved but I'm not sure if he's just saying that to not worry me!

Yeah I hope they use that one! I was at 39.7 BMI at my first appointment... So that's really close to 40!! And TY!

Hmm you think the doctor could fudge that to make it 40

That's what I was thinking and he said he "overlooked it" or he would have made it 40.... I was like oh great!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
