My husband and I are both in the process of getting prepped for the sleeve surgery. We went two weeks ago for our pre-op appointments including blood work, meeting with the NUT and the psych eval. We thought everything was good, but my husband received a letter today that his Vitamin D levels came back really low and he needs to take a special prescription for 3 months and go back to get retested.

He's now freaking out that they may postpone his surgery because of this, the surgeon was hoping for a July date for him and an August date for me. We have another appointment on the 16th which is when we are going to go over surgery dates, but didn't know if anyone had any experience with this?

I have low Iron, low Vitamin D, and even lower thiamin levels (B1). These are issues that I have continuously have dealt with over a lifetime. My surgery was not postponed, and due to those nutritional deficiencies although I have been sleeved it was determined that I would follow the Vitamin protocol for those who have the gastric bypass. Since I was so close to the surgery date I was advised to start thiamin immediately and the other issues were to be addressed after surgery. I do have a liquid Vitamin D that I take.

Exactly what she ^^^ said. :)

I am 5yrs out (today) and have been taking Vit. D, B12, B complex, Calcium and a Multivitamin ever since and will continue to do so. Not a bad sacrifice for all of the rewards I've received .

Call your bariatric team about whether a surgery postponement will be necessary. Only they will know what's right for you and your hubby.

Keep us posted.

Prayers going up.

The Vitamins @@Valentina listed I take also with an addition of Vitamin A and Iron. I was recently sleeved 28 April 2016 so I am kind of a newbie, but it was definitely worth it.

My Vit D level was low, and the first question I asked when they called to tell me was "Will this effect my surgery?" They assured me it would not and simply called in a Rx for a weekly supplement.

My husband and I had low Vitamin D a few years ago, and besides the supplement, were advised to go outside and get actual sun exposure a few times a week. As I am really fair skinned, they told me no more than 10 minutes a pop, and it needed to be with no sunscreen. I wore a hat so my face wasn't getting as much (I turn red easy) and mostly just sunned my arms, legs and stomach, but the husband would take off his shirt to get maximum exposure. We'd take a book and set a timer and did that twice a week.

My levels came up to normal pretty fast while doing this. I think with the indoor jobs many people have and the common usage of sunblock due to the worry of skin cancer, we're blocking the body's natural ability to get Vitamin D from sun exposure - which is a way better method than pill form.

I wear sunblock when I'm outside now, but I'm outside a whole lot more now that I exercise (walk/bike/swim).

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
