Can I proactively prevent hair loss PRIOR to surgery?

Recommended Posts

I got in all my Protein and Fluid, religiously took all my Vitamins, including Biotin and my hair loss started around 3 months post op. You can be the perfect bariatric patient and that doesn't mean it won't happen. I lost about 1/3 of my total hair volume. It has now grown back. Good luck!

@@WLSResources/ClothingExch as long as you don't insult my pet parenting or my little brother, we're good LOL!

Thank you to everyone else as well - I'm one of those "need to plan everything a year in advance" people and seriously neurotic about every small detail I can possibly pick up on. If only I could apply that OCD to deep cleaning my house, exercise, or eating right <_<

I have some damage to my hair so when I started researching about wls and learned about Hair loss, I decided to be a little proactive. I started taking Biotin and I use nioxin and my hair has gotten thicker and longer. I know that if it's going to fall out I cant stop it but I can try to beef up what I have and hopefully the loss won't be too much or at all.

Every one is different. Some lose their hair while others don't. There is no rhyme or reason really. I took Vitamins, Biotin, used special shampoos and at about 5 months post surgery I started having major Hair loss. I just cut my hair short and it eventually all grew back and it looks great now. I'm having revision surgery in August so I fully expect to lose my hair again but I know it's only temporary.

My nut said that gummies are a no-no after surgery

I saw someone referenced that for Biotin or another Vitamin. I am doing Biotin and collagen chews. I have been on biotin for quite some time from dermatologist recommendation for psoriasis

@@chycky good to know! When I had the band they had me on all sorts of gummies, so I will definitely check with the surgeon and the nut (she really is a nut hahaha) about what they recommend! Have you looked into the Patches at all?

We talked about Patches for B12 and nut said docs are concerned that overweight patients don't absorb. Apparently there are studies based on other med patches. Biotin comes in chew on Amazon and is in capsules that could be put in smoothie.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
