I am currently in the information gathering stage about Lap Band. What is the purpose of the pre-op diet? I have read in the posts something about the liver. Please elaborate...

The purpose of this would be so that it shrinks the fat around your liver, so that it is easier for them during surgery when they have to work near it. Also the purpose of some pre-op diets is so that the dr. can see that you are really serious about wanting to lose weight. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

p.s. I had to do a pre-op diet for the insurance, in order for them to pay for it. :)

I have to do a pre op diet of 6 months with my insurance too. Why? Is it to proove something? If I do really good and say loose 30 lbs then I dont need the surgery or or if I do really good then I am disciplined enough for the surgery?

They want to the liver to get rid of the fat and fatty tissue. They said in the seminar that the dr. has to move the liver just a little, or lift it up, something like that and if it is too big, he cannot do it. Good luck. I will be banded on August 27

I love your attitude. I am a Texas gal also. My husband and I are being banded Oct. 1 in Mexico. We are also self pay and feel the benefits will pay us back in the long run. best of luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
